of the house any more. 1 thought I
saw a man at the foot of the stairs,
and I shot at him. I am sorry I hit

Indignantly Denied.
As to th* statement made by Stump
tha, hts wife and her sister were at
Forest Hill Park on Thursday night.
Miss Hamilton emphatically and in
dignantly denies tt. She said that she
and her sister went to a moving pic
ture show in Richmond on the night
In question and that they used tickets
furnished them by their lather who
had received the tickets l>ecause of
posters of the show being pasted In
his windows in Richmond.
Waymack Made Arrest.
Stump was standing at the top of
the stairway in a dark hall when
Officer Eddie Waymack arrived on the

ho rushed up the steps and took the
repeating magazine gun from the hair
i razed man. and escorted him to the
police station, where he was locked
up His wife was being attended by
Dr. Jones, the blood from the shot
wound In her head having streamed
across her Infant, as ner husband was
led away to a cell. He was evidently
under the influence of whiskey. In
fact he told the policeman that he
had ahot his wife and said nothing
about having fired because he thought
he saw a man In the door at the bot
tom of the steps until he had realized
the gravity of the charge against him,
Stump has been married ten year*
and has four children, the oldest ol

ting on a protracted spree about a
year ago sold out hts business for J2§0.
With this money he said he was going
to open a fish business and borrowed
1200 from his father-in-law. Mr.
Hamilton still has note for his money,
none of it hav ing been paid back, and
the most of it spent.
Bahj Mlraeuousljr Saved.
That some of the ahot did not strike
the baby carried in the arms of Mrs.
Stump down the stairs Is due to the
bad aim of the drunken husband. The
infant was apparently on the left arm
of the mother as she was descending
the Stairs The entire load of shot
passed her right side, striking her
head from the crown down to her
shoulder. She fell in a heap frrfm
the third step to the floor, her baby
clasped tightly in her arms, wnile
blood flower freely from her wounds.
With its little dress scarlet red, the
infant was taken up by Mr. Baber,
who thought for the time that it toe
