March came very near blowing In on us yesterday. Brunswick needs more factories, and needs them badly. - - - —— -•- * t Knox doesn't care If they knock a few thousand off of his salary. Atlanta's near-beer saloons ar raid to be atavistic. Maybe they arc! 1 Isn't it about time for Roosevelt to send ano.otr special message to con gress? Having completed the trial of the jurors the Coopers will r.ow go on trial in Tennessee. Now that near-beer has been to satisfactorily perfected, we may soon expect near-whisky. If the appointment of a collector of customs Is passed up to Taft the negro Orum can see his finish. Rome has thirteen candidates for aldermen and the election is to take place on February 23: and It will lie eklddoo for most of the candidates. The Jacksonville Tintcs-Union says Roosevelt Is opposed to the noiseh . - gun. He is no'ng to Africa to make a big noise. We hope he v ill not get a gun noisy enough to lie heaii. in Washington. But " correspondents are evidently - rltins , at so much per column. — - the states and the trustc. The Standnrd Oil company has j changed Its tune toward the state of isaonrt. It is now anxious to get hack into business in the state, from which it ha? been ousted by legal pi a cess for violating the anti-trust sta utes. and it has promised to obey the law? if it is permitted to operate again. exits has put a spoke into the great and arrogant corporation, also, and its laws against such combina tions in restraint of trade have been upheld by th. highest courts in the land, and its ouster of the Standard Oil company has been made effective. How is it that sttca results have been ob tain'd by the and- i>'d state govern ments while the national authority to control the trusts is still nothing out an empty boast? -tr. Roosevelt has Peon thumb ring for seven years about what he would dev to the Stan otrd Oil and other concerns, but he has done ' noth m. effective yet. He has <teciav< and time ar.d again that'the state govern ments cov.Ul not possiUy deal with such large affairs and that the whole business of controlling the trusts should be left to the nn > eal govern- , rnent. , . , Yet here are two spates \vnicu nn\<* brought the biggest trust of them all to its Knees, and that same trust ceu ttnues to ma.ee, faces at the national government, while its officers vote the republican ticket and contribute to tbe IcptiV rr”.'"'"~t' * u'd. THEY MUST HAVE BEEN HIT! The statement, issued by Governor Hoke Smith Saturday with reference to the earnings of eight of the largest railroads in the state of Georgia was the subject of general pdltorial treat ment at the hands of the state -press on Sunday. It is noted with some de gree of interest that tho.se papers in toe state which have never been aide to see anything good in the adminis tration of the present governor were prone to distort his statements and \to hold them up to ridicule. On the other hand the independent press of the slate, always looking to fair treat ment of all subjects discussed, saw at once the splendid answer the g-,v ernor made to bickerings and calam ity-howlers in Georgia and applauded the fact. It is to be regretted that there are newspapers in Georgia which are so biased and so prejudiced in their political views that they cannot ;ee any good in any statement or in any act accomplished by the present ad ministration. The News is thankful that it does not belong to that. clan. It was an ardent supporter of the administration of Governor Hoke Snii'h for various and sundry reasons set forth Ihmisands of t'nies diir'n-j the last two c. mpaigns and yet it has been able to see < rror? in the ad ministration of Governor Smith, an| at the same time it has b n en able :i applaud those things which he has ac complished. While The News did not support Governor-elect Brown, yet when that official assumes the executive office next .fune this publication shall give to him an even "square deal,” and ii tinker his administration an unusual era, of prosperity returns lo Georgia: if the common carriers earn money in larger percent r.gcp. under cond '.‘l on - similar to those of the present adtnln tratlon. The News will not be f mud throwing spit balls al the : dmlnictva tlon and endeavoring to belltth He good things it has accomplished 'lbi sentlment to which we refer is one of Hie truly unhealthy e: editions in the state of Georgia. In fact The News deprecates any attitude assumed by the press of the stale, the baste pole of which is politics; it depredator i because ft come:* from bitterness, cause it is eugemlmid its a i>;:• n' unwholesome and nanst i-.tir.g. and h cause it serves to ; eiard rather tha to increase the prosperity of tH splendid cr.mKwr.veslth. The last cause named by the bishop is possibly respousnde for Keeping many young men out 4i the pulpit. The cos. of living is high and even when tin salaries are adequate there is in many cases a delay In payment, which makes the existence of the ministe, rather precarious at times. The anx iety, discouragement and .;orrow of ar unpaid salary, and its accompaniment of debt; is unjustifiall; and in many cases unpardonable. ..lore is expected of a minister the, cf the average man. 'All of these things should he taken nto consideration and the young min isters in the small churches should be paid betefr salaries. When sal aries are advanced the problem of the insufficient supply of clergy will .tave been solved.” ■ i.
