Tub judges who presided over the prize drill in Savannah knew good work when they saw it. Thk bright paragraphs of “Lai” will make I lie issues of the Sunday Times especially attractive to all c asses of readers. Thk Brunswick Knights worked hard for Hie honors which they have won. 'J his fact makes their victory pirticularly gratifying. . Things are getting unusually warm w Telfair county. The Enterprise Pralla th** editor of the Yeoman an “in solent and puerile delineator of jour nalistic courtesy,” and dubs his paper a “hand organ” and a “wonderfully and fearfully constructed chunk of the scissors and paste pot,” and asserts that the aforesaid editor came to the county “equipped with a pair of scis sors, a linen duster, a railroad pass and a torpid liver.” VICTORY FOR AMERICAN SM. Tlie disclosure of the un-Americun and dishonest arlilices of the present administration to stitie Cuban senti ment, just made by a reputable Wash ington correspondent, shows the true status of Mr. McKinley and his cab inet on tilts important question. It appears that instructions have gone out from the state department to the American consuls in Cuba, in sub stance about as follows: “Don’t say so many things fa\or able to the insurgents mi your letters 'to the department. If you feel you must give the Cubans the lie net'll of tl>e facts which are in their favor, mark your letters containing such in formation “confidential,’' >o that con gress canimt obtain possession of them on a call for tllicial documents.” Such a direct defiance of tin* peo ple’s will, such a purpose on the part of the servants of the people to con ceal the truth from their masters, has seldom been brought to the attention ol t lie world. It was small wonder, in view of such disclosures, that the senate on Thurs day, so boldly defied the administra tion and its craven designs, and car ried t ut the wishes of nine-tenths of tlie population of the United States, by recognizing the In lllgerency of the Cubans. The eyes of the nation are now upon the House, asd especially that corpu lent and powerful portion of its mem bership which sits in the speakers chair. Mr. Reed, who lias proven hiui sdf, in more'than one sense, the da tator of that b>dy, uniyr under ati agreement with the president, lie able to throttle the resolutions. In the meantime, the suggestion that a warship or warships be des patched at once to Havana to check t ie almost certain eil'orts of Weyler to visit Ins natural indignation on Amer ican prisoners, is a wise one, and should be carried out. There is how ever, small bops that this will be done, the present administration having shown itself fully as much in love with Spain as its predecessor. BRUNSWICK’S MAYORALTY. The superior court yesterday deliv ered its long expected decision in the mayoralty contest case of Crovatt vs. Mason. The decision is, sc far as the technical legal points are conce-ned, a victory for Judge Crovatt, although it denies to that gentleman any right or title to the office for which he has made such a prolonged and determined tight. The contention that, Mr. Mason being ineligible, Judge Crovatt should succeed to ttie mayoralty, could not have been seriously considered by the supreme court, and The Times does not believe that it was so considered even by the contestant himself. The law is clearly against the giving of a popularly elective office to a candidate who receives a minority of the votes cast in the election therefor; and whatever the result of the claim that Mr. Mason was ineligible, no court could give Judge Crovatt a title to I those emoluments which he had so signally failed to achieve by the votes of the people. The decision simply means, unless new complications are brought in to continue the contest, that Mr. Mason is legally disqualified for the office to which he was chosen by such a large majority last December, the dii-quali rtcation lying in the fact that he was an aldernan at the time of his elec tion to the mayoralty; and, under tlie involved principle that no city official can be elected to another municipal office during the term for which he was originally chosen, Mr. Mason can not be rtiayor until January 1, 1898, when his two years term as alderman terminates. Another election must be field and another mayor chosen for the term ending January 1, 1899. What real satisfaction Judge Cro vatt realizes from the result of his contest is not easy to perceive; but it is quickly discernible ttiat Brunswick sustains a direct misfortune in the re moval from office of a man who has proven one of the best public servants who ever gave this city’s affairs his time and attention. Thoroughly con scientious, resourceful and influen tial. he was the one among all for the position to which the people called him: and those whose duty it is to choose his successor will have to look long ami earnestly to find a better.
