ALL THE NEWS I ' COLORED CIRCLES. A Department Devoted to the Doings of the Race. THE CHURCHES AND SOCIETIES. What is Transpiring Among the Colored People in and Around Brunswick. Immediately after adjourning the Sunday school convention, the Mt. Olive Baptist association convened yesterday morning in the First A. B. Church. Rev. Alexander Harris, for mer moderator, w.tb Mr. C. H. Ebbs, call*d the association to order. The devotional sei vices were conducted by Rev. L. J. Pettigrew, who lined the opening by mm. Then Rev. T. M. Simmons read the Scripture lessons, followed by a hymn and prayer by Rev. Pettigrew. On account of the indisposition of the moderator, the introductory ser mon was delivered by Rev. N. 11. Whitmire, who took for his text the latter clause of the first verse of the thirteenth chapter of the book of Joshua: “And there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.” The opening remarks of the preacher were calm and thoughtful, yet earnest and impressive. He kindled gradually under the drift of splendid thought until he was aglow from the inspira tion of the sacred truths he dealt with, and finally reached the heights of im passioned oratory. At the close of the sermon Rev. Scranton Roberts led in a very touching prayer. The order of business was then taken up. Appointment of commit tees on finance and letters : On Fi nance—Revs. N. H, Whitmire, Sam McGilrie, L. J. Pettigrew. On letters —Revs. Spratling, Dent, and Pink ney. The former moderator and clerk, Rev. Alexander Harris and Mr. C. H. Ebbs, were re-elected. On the adoption of the report of the committee on temperance, Rev. L. J. Pettigrew made a strong argument against intemperance, in which he de clared as St. Paul, who said: “If eating meat will cause my brother to stumble, I will eat no more meat so long as the world stands.” Said he: “If drinking whiskey will cause my brother to stumble, I’ll drink no more whiskey so long as the world stands. He said further that he did not retuse to drink' because he did not like it, for sometimes w hen he saw the old rock and rye the old taste came up again; hut he had promised God to let it alone, and he purposed to keep his promise. He said that when he had almost lost his health once, his physi cian advised the use of whiskey, but he declined to use it, preferring rather to die. His speech was delivered amid a profound silence, only being inter rupted here and there by applause, as he ascended to the summit of a climax. Many visitors are in the city in at tendance upon the Baptist associa tion, among whom are Revs. L. J. Pettigrew, Simmons, and others.
