The Chicago Tribune Wants to Know What It Will Cost to Fortify This Harbor- A telegraphic inquiry was received yesterday from the Chicago Tribune, by The Times, asking that well-in formed citizens be interviewed and asked to make estimates of the cost of fortifying the harbor of Brunswick in case of war with a foreign power. The query asked for the nearest ap proach to the actual figures that oou'd be reached in a general estimate. Lieutenant Frank D. Aiken, of the Naval Militia, was seen. lie made a study of the question previous to the recent coast defense convention at Tampa. Lieut. Aiken said that the least ex pensive fortification would be sand batteries, on Jekyl or St. Simon islands, overlooking the sea channel, equipped with two ten-inch disap pearing guns. "This sort of fortifica tion” said Lieut. Aiken, “would cost about $300,000. We could furnish all the necessary material here, except, of course, the guns. To equip the batteries with torpedo mines would of course cost more.” The exact object of the inquiry is not known here. It is probably the object of the Chicago paper to ascer tain the total cost to the government of fully protecting all the ports on the the coast. Resolutions, prepared by Col. C. P. Goodyear, and passed by the board of trade, have already been sent to Con gress touobingtbe necessity of fortifi cations here. John sop’s Chill and Fever Tonic Cures Fever In One Day.
