The five thousand dollars left the city of Boston by Benjamin Franklin at the time of his death in 1790 now amounts to $306,880. Tao same sum left to Phil dclphla under Franklin's will now amounts to SIOO,OOO. While Mr. Franklin’s will provided that the money he invested for one hundred years and then be devoted to certain worthy pub ic obj cts in the two cities, he probably had other ideas in vie vat the time he made his will. The rapidity with which a small sum safely and judiciously in vested will grow has been fully demon strated in the most pran'ical manner possible. Then, too, a certain rivalry for honesty and thrift was probably awakened betwt on the two cities. While we have no means of knowing fully tho aims aud purposes of Mr. Franklin, it is a fact t':at valuable lessons can be drawn from the entire incident, by individuals as well as municipalities. The idea might be utilized to wipe ou l the public debt of municipalities, of sla.es end cyen of our national govern ment. One million dollars, for instance, in the hands of wise trustees such as man aged the Franklin fund for either Bos ton or Philadelphia, would glow suf ficient! v to canoel the entire public debt in the course of twenty-live or fifty years. Tho government could well spire the million most any time and it is not likely that any public debt will be paid in aceuturv, if those In charge confine themselvos to ordinary meth ods. Jeremy Taylor wrote —“Be careful to stillc little things, that as fast as they spring up they be cut down and trodden upon; for if they be suffered to grow by numbers they make tho spirit perish. Homo men arc more vexed with a tly than with a wound; and when imats disturb our Bleep, and the reason is diß quieted but not perfectly awakened, it is often seen that he is fuller of trouble than if, in the daylight of hts reason, he were to contend with a potent ememy. In the frequent little accidents and hap penings of a family, a man’s reason can not always be awake; and when the dis courses are imperfect, and a trifling trouble or vexation makes him get more restloss, he is soon betrayed to the vio lence of passion.” This goes to the heart of the undoing of tine nalurcs by small discomfort", petty annoyances, little troubles. They lose serenity, dig nity, sweetness, because they tail to recognize the fact that the trltle which costs a man his self respect, is a9 dan gerous to him as a stumbling block, as the great provocation which throws him in a pa-s on. In all conditions and for all tlu pur poses of t fc it Iscfsmtial that wo bo able to trust our (ellow man, and to se cure and hold his confidence. Next to honors bio cnarsctei, the most essential qualities for comfort and peace and bap pit css are sweetness and aereui’y of character. These qualities can be secured by patience, care, prayer and persistence, aud the firm refusal to yield to the tyranny of small vexations, which necessarily come into every life. These potty annoyautvs crowd every path of work or pleasure, and one must elect whether be will b ush them aside with a strong hat and or permit them to spring up and choke the finer growths In his soul. The irri'able man is some thing more than a Iriil to those who live with bin;; he is ail pressor of vi ta'ily, and therefore a waste ot power. The irritable, peevish man or woman In the holt-(bold, succumbing to every petty annoyance. Is absolutely fatal to •he peace ami comfort of all around them. BRUNSWICK TiMEb-CALL, JANUARY 13 1901 1 Saq U Uaii! For woman’s guidance is found in the fact that Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescrip tion cures female weakness and the dis eases of the delicate womanly organs which darken the lives of so many wom en with suffering and sorrow. That ray of light has penetrated many darkened chambers where women moaned in mis ery, and has guided them out to health and happiness. "Favorite Prescription ” is not a tonic, not a palliative, but a pos itive cure for the diseases which are peculiar to women. It gives vigor and vitality. It banishes nervousness, head ache, and all the aches which come from a diseased condition of the womanly organs. A temperance medicine, it con tains neither alcohol nor narcotics. " I was troubled for three years with ulceration and female weakness and my doctor gave me but little relief.” writes Mrs. Lulu Hunter, of Allenton, St. Louis Cos., Mo. I saw an adver tisement in the paper of I>r. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription. I r*egan the use of it about a year ago. I took five bottles of it. and one bottle of * Golden Medical Discovery,’ and my heulth is better now than it was for years. I have also recommeuded these medicines to some of my friends, who suffered from female weakness, and good results have followed.” fvVi-OPITE FRf SCRIPTf©N J MAKES WEAK WTOMrN STTO -AMP SICK WOMEN WELL Dissolution Notice.
