LEATT - - -X- - Editor BOLAED A. MULLINS, Business Manager g "" - r-TT ... . The Tampa Tribune says, the staroh factories of Florida are flourishing. AbuiidiDg boom is now on. Let this kind of a boom continue. Kansas farmers want 20,000 men, at good wager, ti assist them with the sea son’s crops. The sweetest music on earth. That whistle of Ihe first Brunswick, A Birs mingbam engine. If Carnegie really wants to die s poor man why does he not back one or two newspapers? According to the constitution, and wbat it aaya of ai ms against the country, Agninaldo is indeed faring well. The Washington Post refers to the proposed lillt and Johnson ticket for 1904 as a combination of peanut and throe cent politics. The Geneva correspondent of the London Dailv Mail atserts thut Prel dent McKinley has informed Mr. Kruger tint he c.nnot receive him either officially or unofficially. THE RIGHT SPRIT. The Timks-Cai.l is glade to note the fact that Brunswick responds in a credi table manner to the cry of the nnfortnn ate victims of the Jacksonville fire. It ie time people should never be con gratulated for performing a duty, but in this case our citizens have done more than mere duty, and we are more than gratifnl. Let the good work go on and no city of a like size will show up bet ter than Brunswick. THE PUBLIC DEBT The public dept statement Issnsd on the first of the month hy the treasury department shows that at the close of business on April 30, the debt, less the amount in the treasury, amounted to 91,072,745, 260, a decrease for the month of 94,397,653- This decrease is largely aooounted for by the purchase of bonds or the sin klDg fund. The debt ii re capitulated as follows: Interest bearing debt, $995,350,180. Debt on which interest has ceased since maturity, $1,557,840. | Debt bearing on Interest, $882,332,244. Total, 11879,239,464, This amount however, does oot In clude $770,842 989 in certificates and treasury notes outstanding which are offset by an tque! amount ot cash held in the treasury for tbeir redemption. The cash in the treasury is classified as follows. Gold reserve fund, $150,000,000 Trust fund, $770,84 9829. General fund, $140,919,971, In national bank depositories, $98,822,- 828, Tola', *1,180,085,798, Against which there are demand lia bilities ontstauding hmountlng to $853,- 691, 580’ leaving a cash balance in the treasury 011306,494.208 001*. GOODYEARS SUGGESTION, The suggestion of Col Goodyear, hat a fire station for the ber efit of Sav annah, Brunswick and Jacksonville, and to be snpported by them, be estab lished at Waycroes, is a novel, but it ia doubtful if consideration of It would show It to be praotleal. If there was suob.a station It wonld not be oalled upon by either of the cities until it be came apparent that there was danger of the fire getting beyond the con’rol of the local department. After the call was sent is would be at lease two hours before the engine oould reach the scene of danger, and be put in operation. Within that time the Are would be far beyond the controld of the help that could be contributed by an additinol engine, or evon by two additional en gines. The fact that the building* in all three of the citlee are generally of wood of the m ;st li.fl unable kind mnat not be overlooked In the consideration of this question. If a fire once gets beyond control among building! of this kind there la very little ebsnoe of stopping it befjre it reaches a point where there is nothing more to burn. It is doubtful if the assistance sent by Savannah to Jacksonville had reaohed that city two hours earlier it could htve lessened the ez’ent of the calamity. Tbe wind oarried the sparks for squares and bu'ldlng were Bet on fl-e blocks away from where tha fire was ao’u’ly raging. New flree ware being started all the time. If there had been no wind it is probable that the local departmont wonld have bad no difficulty in keeping the fire with a narrow limit, It might nnt hare got beyond the bulldlig in which It origins’cd. It is doubtful if all the fire service of this city could have stayed the fire at Jacksonville after it got under full heads way. A single engine therefore or even two engines sent from Waycrosi would have been of oompartivelr little s u vice A fire servloe to be offoctive in as an in flammable city as Jacks inville wbb mast be on hand promptly: Savannah News. WOODBYNE APIARY. Honey Making In Our Sister County is Successful. Tlie Southeast Georgian saya; On Wed nesday last the Georgian man went over to see neighbor Whitford and the Wood bine apiary. This is undoutedly the sweeteit place in these parts. Most of our readers, of courte, know where it is and who owns it. From a small beginiug Messrs. Whitford A Green have built their apiary t.p to one of the blggettlittle thing in the oounty. They have now about 116 hives and expect to make over 4,000 pounds of boney this lesson. Already the little busy bees have made their owners estimate nearly 500 pounds of the finest kind of white honey, and Mr Withford expeota to have some of it on the market about the middle of May. This shows to what large proportions even such a small matter of keeping a few bees will grow when it is given attention and conducted intelligen tly. uow’a.Tiiisr We offer One Hundred Dollnrs Re ward for any oase of Catarrh that oao not honoured by Hall’s Catarrh Cure.
