We should all nnite In one great ef fort to upbuild Brunswick. “Dr. Parkhurrt has been out in Chi cago, making trouble ae usual,” says the Tampt Tribune. The Rome Tribune says: ‘‘The first locomotive of the Brunswiok &. Bir mingham railroad has arrived at Bruns wick.” Brunswiok is making arrangements o receive the delegates to the grand lodge, Knights of Pythla*, on May 20. —• Rome Tribune. A DILLY DALLY. The Timks-Cali. i, indee , sorry that Council did not take some decisive action thone liquor question last night. It looks too mi’ch like child’s play to have this matter postponed from lime to time, when there la a general unsettled condition among the business men and the people generally. There is no use in delaying the matter, and we sincerely hope some solution wl'i be forthcoming at once, It is unfortunate that the question was not settled in the begin ning. ASKB FOR AID. Tbc Relief committee of Jacksonville issues tbe following: “To thepeopleof the United States Tbe Relief commit tee, having received many inquiries con cerning the situation here, desire to make the following general statement. The city of Jacksonville, on Friday, May 8, was visited by one of the most horrible and appalling calamities that has ever happened in any eommnntty of modern times. About noon of that day a lire was discovered palmetto fiber factory in the extreme western portion of the city. A high wind was then blowing to the eastward, carrying the Samos over the brads of the firemen. The fire spread with snob rapidity that cur citizens had great diilioulty in leav ing their homes and places of business, In many oasee they barely escaped with their lives, and we regret to say a num ber were burned to death or drowned in their efforts to escape from the liames. The number at this time we have been nnable to ascertain, although five bodies have been taken from tbe ruins, and from 10 00 to 15,000 people are home less. The burned area ex'ends east and weat about two miles, and north and aouth varying from one-half to three quarters of a mile. In this area was eltuaied the oldest and most populous portion of the city, embracing all clasEes of people, high and low, rich and poor. The flames carried before them home*, churches and all the public bulldintr., aave one. Wore than halfof thebusiness section was also consumed. The prop erty loss aggregates from 112.000,000 to 815,000.000. “The Jacksonville Relief Association, ‘•C. E. GARNER, President, “EDWIN G. WEED, “Bishop of Florida, 8& “J. E. T. BOWDEN, Mayor, “TELFAIR STOCKTON, “Special Committee.’’ AN EARL AMD AM HSIRESB. Hetty Greene’s pretty daughter is a witness in a New Yoik damage suit. The Earl of Yarmouth, an impeounious young Englishman, Is snlng a paper which said he was hard up; that be was a poor actor, and that he was in need ef an heiress, The paper went on to de olare that the earl was a bargain. At the time of the suit he was “dirt oheap,” but the papsr said that later on some thing might happen to increase bis value. Wbereipon the young actor and earl sued f0r|25,000. The New York papers declare that Sylvia Greene, the daugh ter of the richest woman in the world, has been subpoenaed by the newspaper to show that the earl was trying to marry an heiress. The pretty Sylvia, with wavy hair, brown eyes, and Arm, pretty mouth, smiled pleasantly at the earl in court, who immediately .left his lawyer and sat down to have a chat with the handsome witness who was going to testify against him. How mueh the pretty Sylvia knows about the impecn nions Englishman is of oourse a secret. She was expected to testify that be of fered her his heart and hand, but that she had negltcted the adv.ce of the paper, to “oome early and avoid tbe rush.” Tbe newspaper denies malice, and olTurs to prove tbe trntb of its allega tions. The law presumes malic", and it is dilllcult to see how a journal which holds up a young man as hard up, a poor sctor, and a fortune home', can deny malice. The evidence of Mi s Sylvia Greene will probably have much to do with the issno in the csße.—Savan nah Press. It will be remembered that this self same earl played here to a email an il ionoo some time ago, and he did not Beem to impress Brnnswickians with bis abilitits as an actor. In our opinion, ho is the worst kind of a snub. The Times Call has endeavored to remain neutral iu the anti-ea loon sgita tion, and we think a majority will agree with us when we say we have. Reports from Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkanrasand Georgia, show that the late cold snap has killed a large percentage of the cotton which was just maturing, and that much replanting will be necessary.
