Tbat idlers and loafer* ate a tnenanoe to the peace aud safely of any commun ity which is infested wLh them, is shown in a case whinb comes from Augusta. A gentleman of city was approached at his home by a white tramp and asked for something to eat. fie generously supplied the beggar’s wants, whereupon 'ho tramp it.ated It was not something to ear, but money tbat be wauted. The man refused to give him money, aud without further words the idling scour Urol seized apt near by and attempted to brain bim At this junc'ure a policeman appeared and arrested the vagrant and placed him in the lock up. What occurred io Aogusta may occur in Brunswick at any time unless this tramp nuisance is aba'.od, A most rfTeotive method of 00-'perat lng with the polioe in ibis matter would j be for every one at whose door a tump knocks to at once inform the police and have him arrested. The tramps, idlers, loafers and vagabonds must be driyen out of Brunswick, and tbs sooner the bolter, Let all co-ops rate in this good work. DU BIGNON NOT IN THE RACE. The announcement from lion, Fleming du Bigucn, that be will not be in the race for tbe govtruoraihp In 1902, will come as a surprise to his admirers all over tbe state, who were ready to have given him tbeir support. It was genera'ly thought that Mr. du Bignon would be tbe South Georgia oandidale and be would have received tbe almost unanimous support of this ssot ion. Mr. du Bignon does not only an-, nounce that be will not be a candidate for governor, but expects to retire from public life altogether ou advice of hie physician. This news will be received with sorrow throughout tbe state. For twenty-five years be has been a leader in many ways in Georgia. He first served Chatham county as representa tive and attracted attention by his clear and legal mind and at once became prominent in politics of tbe state. But while Mr. du Bignon has thus been forced Into retirement, It iv with the consciousness that his work is fully appreciated by his fellow citizens, whose only legret is that they oannot honor him as they would. He has twice been the great leader of the democratic masses of Georgia in their primary efforts to establish perfect government. This tribute is even higher, when prop*, erly considered, than (he election to tbe governorship itaell, which comes as the result of united party work, in tbe one case tbe work wss personal and tbe response waa largely an expression of •pprecla'lon of h s personal merit, while in the other it is the mass that moves, anl no one man can claim tbe credit of it. It is to be hoped tbit Mr. du Bignoa will tlnd himself so re-established iu health that h.s retirement fiotu public affairs will bo but temporary, and that tbe democracy of Georg a inuy soon again have tne help of his strong arm and clear head.
