ANOTHER CONVENTION. Cane and Cassaya to Be the Theme Dis cussed. Another convention is likely to be held in Brunswick during the month of October. A local in the Macon Telegraph of a few days ago notes that President Frank D. Aiken of the Brunswick Board of Trade is sending out letters requesting advices as to what day in October will be most desirable for delegates to oome to Brunswick and talk over oane and cassava again. Another convention on this line will do good and it is to be hoped that one will be arranged. Appointed Manager. As an evidence of appreciation for the good work done by Mr. A, G. Rabinson, as agent, the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company has appoint ed him manager of this territory. He will occupy offices in the opera house block and push the alreedy large business of this reliable company in this section. THE SCHLEY INQUIRY. Court Resumes Taking of Testimony at Washington Yesterday. Tha Schley court of inquiry was re sumed at Washington yesterday. The day was mostly consumed in taking testimoney from Capt Harper. This witness proved a tart one nud had several passes at words with attorney Raynor when hia attention was oalled to a contrary statement by Admiral H’gg'nsou tha witness said it was not material to him what any other man bad said; he had given his estimate and was not concerned about the state j meats of otbers. “Then you object to having your memory refreehadl- 1 ” said Mr. Raynor. “I said nothing of the kind,” replied the witness. “I am liore to give testi mony and I objeot to being spoken to in the way you speak to me.” He aiso objected to Raynor’s shaking his linger at him, sjying he construed it os a menace. Raynor insisted that he meant to be entirely respectful and not to menace the witness. Counsel questioned the witness con cerning his estimate at night that the vessels of the fleet steemed eight miles to tha eastward and seven miles to the westward of the mouth of the harbor. The point sought to be made was that to make this sail of 10 miles would re quire greater speed than three knots an hour, which the witness testified he made, but Harber maintained his posi tion, Eaying he had given bis best im pression. Mrjor Raynor announced the cross examination closed and the witness re examined by Mr. Hanna, assistant advoqa’o. Mr. Hanna asked wb* her it was practicable, in times of urgency,to make log entries of signals. The witness replied that it was prao tioiple for a person who usually made suob entries to put them down st that time. It is necessary to write them out later, trusting to memory. He also stated that it vias inpossible for him to have had knowledge of signals from the Tax&s. CANDLER ON FRANCHISES. Is in Favor of Taxing / Franchises -May Recommend It in Message. Atlanta, Sept, 21—-Governor Candler, in an interview today, eaya he favors taxing franchises of all sorts. This statement from Governor Candler is re garded as signigoant, as a bill to tax franchises Is now pending in the legis lature. The bill will be bitterly oppos ed by the railroads, however. The gov ernor may reoomraend the passage of a fiancbise tax bill in his message to the legislature, Lobbyiug against the bill is said to have already begun, TO SOLICIT SUBSCRIPTION, Capt. W. F. Symons Will Assist the Mc- Kinley Monument Fund, The Atlanta Journal has started a subscription list to secare funds for erecting a monument in memory of the late President McKinley. Capt, W, F. Symons will be at the hoad of the Brunswick end of the move; men? and will commence tomorrow to secure funds. Suocess is assured him for this worthy oause.
