asrjs so THEiMRBOROW SOUTHERNER. it c r. mm D f TARBORO', SATURDAY, JAN. 27, 1806 Attempted Assassination of Senator. nade. Washington, Jan. 12. On Wednesday evening, between 8 aud 9 o'clock, a man, of unusually large pro portions, called at the residence of Hon. Benjamin F. Wade, Uuited States Sen ator from Ohio, on 4J street, atd asked to see the Senator. He was shown up stairs by the servant to Mr. Wade's room, and, after being seated, he stated that be was trying to obtain employ ment in tbc U. S. navy; and asked Mr. Wade to sign a paper of recommenda tion for him, in order to further his ob ject. Senator Wade refused to do so. He did not know him, and advised him -to procure the signature of some person to whom he was known. After listen ing to this reply the strange visitor, whose features Mr. Wade, describes as singularly malicious and brutal, looked at the Senator with a significant scrowl which the latter plainly interpreted as meaning mischief. At this juncture of the interview Mr. Wade arose and step ping into the adjoining room armed himself with a loaded pistol and quietly returned. . After looking at eac'i other for some time in silence, the man begun the con versation by saying: "Ain't you going to sign my paper V to which the Sena tor returned au emphatic negative, ad ding that he had uo knowledge of him. The stranger arose, drew out a bowie knife, about 12 iuches long, remarking, I suppose you know we are now alone, sir, in this room," was proceeding to unsheath the weapon, when Senator Wade sprung to Lis feet, and drawing the pistol, place it within a short dis tance of the fellow's head, telliug him, to clear out immediately, or ho would shoot him. Taken somewhat by sur prise, the man began to fiod his way to the door, followed up closely be Senator '"Wade with the pistol. The Senator saw his visitor down stairs, and before reaching the door, quietly iuformed him that he had a great notion to shoot him anyhow. Upon this the stranger departed. Du ring the vitit he failed to produce any papcr6 for signature and evidently made this a mere pretext for the interview. At the time of ths visit there were but three persons in the house, beside Sena tor Wade.
