THE WEEKLY SOUTHEftKEIt. THURSDAY, - FEBRUARY 21, 1857 Written lor the Southerner. Lines on the Death of Jlrs. EIIaT. SJcLcod , Scarce four months firora her marrige eve, -r Ere spectre death claimed her his bride. They bore her to her narrow bed, And heaped the soft mould on her breast ; And tears by loving friends were shed ,Above her silent home of rest, " May gentle angels 'round it keep, A holy watch where now she sleeps. She came unto our bourns fair, As one that came of angel birth ; And ere grim time her heart did sear, The faded floweret slept in earth. Bright scenes soon pass from mind away, But grief will e'er its impress stay. r ' And one there was who mourned her fate, For she was his own chosen bride ; "And as the bird that's lost its mate, He wandered on life's busy tide, But ere the winter's wind was spent, His spirit to its maker went. And one is left a mother sad, To breast alone life's stormy wave ; And mourn the only child she had, Which sleepeth now within the grave. Ah ! death why didst thou take the To plant above in Eden bowers. There is no stately monument, No stone is reared above the grave ; " To speak of many virtues blent, In one we tried so hard to save. , But there the Rose shall soonest bloom, And shed its fragrance o'er her tomb. VIOLETTE, Lilhngton, Feb. 12, 1S67. SPUNCI ANA. A girl is a sum when she causes one to sigh-for-her. If a man '.kicks the bucket" it is a fcign he will turn a little pail. When have married people passed through the alphabet of love? When they teach the ba be. Eighty-five students have entered at the Deaf and Dumb Institute, at Ral eigh this year. A masked ball was recently given in St. Petersburg in aid of the Cretans, J.fle rccciDta were 5ol (J (JO - I An exchange says: "When you are j angry don't write. Words when spoken are air, but when they are written they are thiDgs." A talkative youth asked a young lady if her cars had ever been pierced ? "No," she said, "but they have often been bored." ! "Isaac, my son, let the good Book be a lamp unto thy path." "Mother, 1 think that is muktDg light of sacred things." An ingenious Frenchman has invent ed a method of stopping a running horse by a contrivance which seizes his nostrils and stops his respiration. A briefless young lawyer thinks that any young lady who possesses a thousand acres of land has sufficient ground for an "'attachment." A Southern paper says that circus. 8cs, negro shows, street fiddlers and organ grinders with monkeys are in 'Variable indications of reconstruction. Prentice, of the Louisville Journal, 'tenders his advice to the public as fol lows: "Never buy goods of those who don't advertise. They have so little to Bell that they have to sell dear". ' " He never had an enemy " is often said of one just dead, as the highest eulogy which can be passed on his memory. And yet Christ has a very 'great many enemies. It is cvideDt, therefore, that the characters did not resemble. Sliggins saw a note lying the ground, but knew that it was counterfeit, and walked on without picking it up. He told Smithers the story, when the latter said." Do you know, Sliggins you have committeed a very grave offence V "You have passed a counterfeit bill, Messrs. Branson & Farrar, Publish ers, of this city, have laid on our table a neat parapbJet copy of the Journal of the last North Carolina Annual Con ference, printed by Messrs. Nichols, Gorman & Neathery, job printers, of this city. Besides the regular proceed , ings of ths Conference, it has a gocd deal of valuable matter in the appen dix. In the bounds of the Conference, there are 30,362 white members, and 5,074 colored, making an increase of 2,307 white members, and a decrease of 2,013 colored members. The de crease of colored members is owing to the large number who have joined the African M. E. Church. There are also 178 local preachers, and 10,336 Sun- r.-day School scholars. Some of our cotemporaries- have published the above as the number of 31ethodists in the Stats. This is an error. Besides the North Carolina Conference in this State, the Virginia, llolston and South Carolina Conference occupies portions of it. Hence, before the war, there were about 70,000 Meth- dist communicants in the entire State, and about 500 local preachers. Per haps at the present time, owing to deaths during the war, and the number of colored members who have left the , M. E. Church, South, and joined tbe ; African M. E. Church, there aie at present, not more than 60,000 commun- icants in the M. E. Church, South, in the State. Ral Sentinel. Fetilizers for Spring Crops. , E. F. A large amount of both the Pacific Gu ano and Bone Flour, was used in Ed combe the past Spring, giving more satis faction than any other that has been used for ten years past.
