THE WEEKLY SOUTHERNER. THURSDAY, - MARCH 7, 1857 The Soldier's Crave. Tread lightly 'tis a soldier's grave, A lonely, mossy mound -And yet, to hearts like mine and thine, . It should be holy ground. Speak softly let no careless laugh, . No idle, thoughtless jest, 4 Escape your lips, where sweetly sleeps The hero in his rest. For him no reveille shall beat, When morning bright shall come ; For him at night, no tatoo rolls Its thunder from tho drum. No costly marble marks the place, Recording deeds of fame, But rudely on that bending tree, Is carved a soldier's name. A name not dear to tis but ah 1 There may be lips that 'breathe That name as sacredly and low As prayers at dewy eve. There may be brows that wear for him The mourning cypress vine, And hearts that make this lonely grave A holy pilgrim shrine. There may be eyes that joyed to gazo With love into his own, New keeping midnight vigils long, With silent grief alone. There may be hands now clasped in prayer lhis soldier s hand has pressed, And cheeks washed pale by sorrow's tears, His own cold cheeks caressed. Tread lightly for a man bequeathed, Ere laid beneath this sod, His ashes to his native land, . His gallant soul to God. SPUNGIANA A case of honesty in a conductor on 6ne of the New York street cars is reported. Judge Warren, of a Connecticut Court Las decided that corporal punish ment of a scholar by a teacher in the common schools is unlawful. In Washington a woman shot a man because he did not marry her ; in Cincinnati another shot one because he did. What caa a batchelor do to save his bacon. A clerical gentleman observes that dancing has a tendency to shrivel up man's moral dignity," and reduces society to a "nonentity." It also affects shirt collars. A crinoline manufacturer, in Saxony, has made during the last ten years, no less than 803,784,000 hoop skirts springs, or enough to go around the world thirteen times and a half. The fashion fifteen years ago of wearing black court plaster on the face, has just been revived in New York j and a number of bells now appear in full dress with sable spots in close proximity to charming dimples. The following was foucd posted on the wall of a country post office : "Lost a red kat. He had a white spot on 1 his behind leggs. He was a she kat. I will give three shillins to evriboddi to bring him horn." " Does the razor take hold well ?" juquireu a Darner wno was shaving a gentleman from the country. " Yes," replied the customer with tears in his eyes, it takes hold first rate, but it don't let go worth a cent." At a late fashionable wedding in New York, "the trains of the bridesmaids' dresses were so long that one couple had to wait at the door un til the other had gone some distance up the aisle." The number of deaths recorded in New York for the week ending Satur day, the 23d inst., was 430, being an increase of 25 over the number repor ted last week, and 22 more than was Reported in the corresponding week of -last year. The increase for the last "Week is owing to tho pressure in the public institutions. During a suit for breach, of promise r in Liverpool, England, the fair plaintiff produced nine hundred and eighty four letters written to her by the defen ant in two years. The woman's coun sel threatened to read them -ell, when the defendant compromised the matter, and the judge surrendered his hope of suicide. Emigration from Germany to the United States, accordinz to letters t written from Municb, will become a complete torrent" as the Spring advan- x ces. The troubles and disappointments in Germany following the war of last year add greatly to the tide that is set ting towards America. Stick your bands in your pockets, and ' discourage every enterprise in every way, if you do not sec a dollar in it for your greasy stocking. PERUVIAN GUANO SUBSTITUTE ! i BATJGH'S R A W B ONE SUPER-PHOSPHATE OF LIME Manufactured under the formula original ed in 1854 and patented by BAUGH & SONS, SOLE PROPRIETORS, AT THE Delaware River Chemical Works, PHILADELPHIA, U, S. A. This old established Manure is manu factured from Bones that have not been burned or steamed, and it contains all thoir original organic matter. It is active in its operation, and is a fertilizer of great durability. .It does not exhaust the soil like Peruvian Guano, but on the contrary permanently improves it. Previous to 1861 it was introduced into the Southern States to considerable extent, and again in 1865, where it has been used with remarkable success upon Cotton, Corn, Tobacco and all Crops. A trial will convince any planter of its merits. Pamphlets containing well-known Southern evidence furnished upon appli cation to New York or Philadelphia offices. This is just the thing for those who will pay Cash for a good article at a low price. We have a coarser article at Twenty Dol lars per Ton. Samples sent by mail, free on receipt of 3 cent stamp. Sir: In replay to your inquiry of our experience, in the use oi your irapioveu i Poudrette. purchased of you for this year's Cotton Crop, we would beg leave to say that ths present season has been one quite unfavorable to the action of all fer tihzcrs. Several kinds of Manures were used by us, with the exception of your Pou drette, with little or no effect to the crop. Where the Poudretlc was applied il gave near half a bile more per acre, and caused the Cotton to open much earlier, and we would therefore recommend the same as a con centrated manure for the growth of Cotton, as well as improvoment of the soil. Yours very respectfully, HENRY P. STULTS & BRO. feb. 7, 18G7. 10 Gw .f G EJ C I, FOR THE SALE OP Soluble Pacific Guano and Flonr of ISnw Itnuc. M' Baltimore, Sole Agents, for the sale of the above fertilizers in the Southern States, have appointed me their Agent for Edgecombe and the adjoining counties. Arrangements will be made to supply the demand for either of these fertilizers at Washington, Greenville and Falkland, on Tar River, and at Enfield, Whitaker's, Battleboro', Rocky Mount, Joyner's and Wilson Stations on the Wilmington and Weldon Rail Road, at a very small advance on Baltimore retail prices. The subscriber having been offered the Agency, of nearly all of the fertilizers manufactured in the United States, made choice of the above mentioned, as being in his opinion the very best known, on ac count of their containing the largest amount of the more valuable elements re quired by the growing crop, and for the permanent improvement of the Soil. A large amount of both the Pacific Gu- ano ana lione t lour, was usea in j& age combe the past Spring, giving more satis faction than any other that has been used for ten years past. In one instance the Pacific Guano increased the yield in cotton 133 per cent. R. NORFLEET, Tarboro', Dec. 20. 4 3m NOTICE. It is unsurpassed as a Fertilizer, being equally, if not more stimulating to the first Crop, than the best Peruvian Guano, and contains properties which make it perma nent and also destructive to insects in the soil. The latter quality Is peculiar to it alone. It is adapted to all soils and all kinds of crops, never varies in strength, has been fully tested by the side of No 1 Peruvian G uano, and the palm awarded it We claim that three-fourths of a Ton oi this Guano, on a like soil, applied accord ing to directions will give the same yield as one Ton best Peruvian, and as it costs one-third less, is the CHEAPEST and BEST FERTILIZER offered the PUBLIC.
