.ft f f- Mi TUE WEEKLY SOUTHERNER. THURSDAY, APRIL 25, 1867 The Dyeing Confederate. BY A VIRGINIA LADY. I am dyeing ! Ilessie, dyeing ! With the bark of pltim and walnut, Boils the kettle hot and last, Gathered in the days long past. Reach a hand ; oh,. Ilessie help me ; Cease thy giggle and look here ; Notice this great pile of garments Thou and I alone would wear. Though my torn and faded dresses Lose their blackness more and more, And my well worn shawls and stockings Tell how war has made me poor ; Though no glittering silks are with them, Craved by every woman's will I must mend, and change and alter Dye my Sunday garments still. Let not fashion's heartless daughters Mock this crape this " garb of woe," 'Twas no woman's hand that tore it 'Twas a Yankee's soiled it so. llate, then Ilessie, bring your dresses ; Eist, like mine, they were, and gay; Throw them into this big kettle, They're too good to throw away. Should the rick folks, who have plenty, Sneer at bark dyts in the towns ; "H'e will say if they don't like them, Let them send us better gowns. I must dye my web of liusey, To be woven for the spring ; Judy waiteth for her filling And this color is;" the thing." So, be quick, my laughing Ilessie ! Gather up our mournful pile ; Don't expect to light that dry wood iiii me spienaor ot thy smile. Hand me here those capes and dresses, Take thy veil and traps with mine ; So, we'll be in style next Sunday Triumph in that cloak of mine ! This is dyeing, Ilessie I dyeing ! Starts a tear drop in thine eye ? Wipe it off, my bonnie Ilessie ! Tatters are not worth a sigh. See ! that stick will break ! that kettle ! Ilessie, dear ! this is the knell! Cherished hopes! the dye is thrown ! " Reconstruction!" fare the wellj! The above, mentioned kettle, or dye pot, -was probably the original Iron Pot brought ftv-m Ireland by the grand parents of John C. Calhoun, and now in the possession of the lady by whom the above parody was written." SPUNGI AN A. Two hundred women have graduated from medical colleges in N. Y. City, Philadelphia, and Boston. When a man kisses the wrong wo man what sort of a weapon should he be dispatched with? A blunderbuss, of course. Tracey. Sir. J. Mclane, of Virginia, owns the land onwhich the first battle of Bull Run was fought, and also the ground in Appomattox county, where Gen. Lee surrendered. There is something exquisite in an American s reply to the European traveler, when he asked him if he had just crossed the A)p3 : "Wal, now you call my attention to the fact, 1 guess I did pass risin' ground." 'It is very sickly here," said one of the son3 of the Emerald Isle the other day, to another. "Yes," said Lis companion, "a great many have died this year who never died before." i A young lady being requested by a bachelor to take a seat upon his knee, in a crowded 6leigh, made the following reply : "No, thank you, I'm afraid such an old seat would break down with me." "I bequeath," said an Irishman, in his will, "to my beloved wife all my property without reserve, and to my eldest son, Patrick, one half the remainder, and to Dennes, my young gest, the rest. If anything is left, it may go to Terrence McCarty." The Maine papers are greatly ex ercised over the fact that marble-playing has been introduced amongst the b)ys of that State. They demand that rigid prohibitory laws be passed against this demoralizing mode of gambling. A wee bit of a boy having been slightly chastised by his mother, sat very quiefly in his shair for a few minutes afterwards, no doubt thinking very profoundly. At last he spoke out thus : "Muzzer, 1 wish dad would get anuzzer housekeeper I've got tired o' secin you round." A lover, who was slighted by the females, very modestly asked a young lady, "if she would let him spend the evening with her?" "No," she angrily iepJied, "that's what I won't." "Why," replied be, "you needn't be eo fussy j I didn't mean this even , ing, but somfi stormy one when I can't go anywhere else." Whether ladies ought to have 6eats I believe they ought. I always side with the ladies. When I am in a crowded car and a lady comes in, I think it the duty of some other man to get up and give her his seat. I look around the car to see if any roan in the crowd looks like making a move in that direction, and when I see they all keep their seats, I bury myself in my newspaper and blush for my sex. Cory O' Lanus. The plantation of ex-Prcsidcnt Davis, together with that of his brother, was p i It r roU. a short time since, to one of his' I former slaves, for the sum of four hun ' dred thousand dollars, on a credit of ten years. It is sard that the planta tion will yield at least eighty thousand dollars this year. We believe it is generally understood that this property was confiscated. Local and Miscellaneous.
