NAMING THE BABY.
They gather In solemn council
The chiefs in the household ban.d
They Bit in the darkened chamber
A. conclave prond and grand
They peer in the curtained cradle
And each with one voice exclaim.
As they point to the new-Iound treasure
"The baby must have a name!'1
They bring forth the names by dozens,
With many an anxious look,
They scan all the tales and novels.
They search through the good Old Book,
Till the happy-faced young mother,
Xow urging her prior claim,
Cries out in the fondest accents,
"Oh give him a pretty name."
"His grandpa was Ebenezer—
Lone buried and gone, dear soul,"
Bays the trembling voice of grandma
As the quiet tear-dropa roll.
"Oh, call him Eugene Augustus,"
Says the youngest of the throng
"Plain John," says the happy lather,
"Is an honest name and strong.1'
And thus is the embryo statesman
Perhaps, or the soldier bold,
Respecting his future title
Left utterly out in the cold!
And yet, it can matter but little
To him who is heedless of fame—
For no name will honor the mortal.
If the mortal dishonors the name.
XETTIE'S WORTH.
BY W. BELLE.
"Yes, she is coming to-morrow, An
drew."
"Confound it!"
"Andrew!"
'Tray excuse me, mother but real!y
you have no idea how much I dread
the arrival of the young lady. I had
planued to enjoy this summer, and it
seems a pity to be denied the enjoy
ment."
"Andrew," said his mother, with a
tone and voice full of surprise and pain,
"the mother of our expected guest has
been a true friend to your dear father,
as well as a faithful comforter to his
companion in life hence if she wished
her daughter to visit us for the restora
tion of her health, we should welcome
her kindly."
"Ah, yes but, mother, we men re
things differently from what you
gard
women-folk do, you know. Besides, I
had claimed to enjoy boating and fish-
heels? But, I say, mother, is this Miss
Nettie Chester good looking? You know
we men admire beauty."
"She was called a beauty from a child.
I have not seen her since," replied Mrs.
Carpenter, quietly. "However, An
drew, vou will not be troubled with the
care of this young lady. I wiil ask Aus
tin to assume that great responsibility."
"Austin!"
And Andrew laughed aloud at the
bare thought of Austin, his farm-bred
brother, playing the agreeable to an
heiress like Nettie Chester.
"Beg pardon, mother, bui really I
could not help smiling, for Austin is so
very bashful, and women cannot put
up with that, you know. By the way,
mv brother ought to go to the city with
me. He is just good for nothing, mop
ing here on the farm."
"I could not spare both my lads at
once," replied Mrs. Carpenter tenderly,
yet half rebukingly, as the saucy eyes
again looked into hers.
And, nodding gayly, the handsome
face took its departure.
-i
"Well, Austin, what does she look
like, eh!" Or were you too shy to take
a peep at her? You went to the sta
tion for her, didn't you?"
Austin Carpenter rose from his seat
under the old apple tree, and threw
aside his book as his brother spoke,
while a bright flush mounted his pale
brow.
"No, no," he stammered, hurriedly
"that is, father went—"
"Father! Well, well, that is good.
Why, Austin, what a dolt you are!"
"But, Andrew, I am not myself when
in ladies' society, you know," said Aus
tin.
Andrew smiled as he stuck one of the
apple blossoms into his button-hole.
"Come on, Austin, let us go and re
ceive the criticisms of this fair lady.
What, afraid? She is only a woman,
after all.''
Miss Nettie Chester rose gracefully
as the two brothers came in—Andrew
cool and collected, Austin perfectly shy,
with his tall, awkward figure and pale
face, and received their greeting kindly.
"How do you do? Ahl is this Austin?
Yes, Andrew knew it to be just so
and, aa he sauntered towards the great
barn, on the lookout for their gay
guest, he could not help casting one
ray of pity upon his rough, shy brother.
"Oh, Mr. Carpenter! Take care,
please! I am losing my hold! There
they go! Oh, dear me! What have I
done!''
Andrew brushed the broken egg-shells
with their sticky contents, from his eyes
sound proceeded, straight into) the teas
ing face of Miss Nettie, and a shade of
annoyance crept over his. In a mo
ment more a slight form bounded to his
side, and a pair of soft hands were
wrung over the broken eggs lying upon
the floor.
"Oh, dear, those eggsl What will
your mother say?"
Andrew's voice was a little spiteful.
I don't think she will mourn the eggs
much, Miss Chester. My coat has suf
fered the most. Nettie looked up
quickly. Then the solemn figure be
fore her proved too much for her grav
ity, and she laughed as if she really en
joyed it.
'Oh, dear, how funny you do look!
It is all over your hair, eyes and ears.
Dear me! Pray excuse me, but reaily,
cannot help it. Oh, those eggs!"
and i^lized moustache^ and" then look-1 same fate, by the receding of the river

Andrew heartily wished he might stop
that roguish mouth, somehow, or hide
from those tantalizing eyes, watching
his every movement. Yet that was im
possible so, bowing in as dignified a
manner as he was able he turned on his
heels and walked away, muttering:
"Confound it. If I didn't love her so
well, I wouldn't care," while the laugh
of Miss Nettie Chester followed him.
That night Miss Chester came to beg
his pardon, which she did very prettiiy,
standing where the moonbeams fell just
across the dimpled mouth. And after
she had concluded, Andrew Carpenter
told his love for her, and begged her to
share his life with him. But something
changed Nettie Chester just then. Tne
light-hearted child went away, and a
woman full of sympathy took her place,
while she told him that full three hours

Patiently Andrew Carpenter took home
his bitter lesson, then folded the hand
on his arm more closely.
'•Who has won you?" he asked.
"Austin," she answered.
Andrew Carpenter started and won
dered at her choice.
But when the years rolling by showed
that brother to be a rising merchant, he
no longer wondered, but felt a deeper
love for the gentle woman who over
looked his faults so kindly, and who
never alluded to the many boastful I
sayings which had so often escaped his
hps.
