Agt., Duluth- To Be Regretted. (From the Brainerd Tribune.) But one sentiment results from the perusal of the statement pub lished this last week in the Grand Rapids Herald Review (Populist), a sentiment of regret, profound and sincere. It was highly illad* vised to attempt to undermine Mr. McCienahan in the public esteem by such an article, for the tone adopted reflects no credit upon either Judge Holland or his cause. It would, in truth, he di cult to believe of a total stranger grant ing that his was of any promi nence at all, some of the deroga tory suppositions advanced as ap plying to Mr. McCienahan. Th republican nominee enjoys too high a character, he possesses a capacity for service on tn bench too well defined, to make it possi ble to place any confidence in such a paragraph as for example, is taken from the Herald Review ar ticle and printed below "He (McCienahan) boasts of his qualificatians, when as a mat ter of fact, there are few attor neys in the district, but what can try a case better than he can, and none but would make fully as able a judge. Little Mac's principal ability lies in boasting of his qual ifications and trying to belittle other attorneys." Jbdge Holland is playing with fire. There was once a partner ship under the name of Holland & McCienahan, a partnership th at covered a period of some years. I lasted in fact until the seniorpart ner became a judge. While the two attorneys were so associated, Holland would absent himself from the city for weeks at a stretch, resigning all his practice to Mr. McCienahan. These facts readily recalled, and if no other evidence offered, they in them selves would refute emphatically such charges as are made. Very frequently in the past Judge Holland has been free to express his admiration of McCienahan. Because an election now impends, is there reason for completely re jecting all past estimates mad by Judge Holland? It is distinctly disappointing that a candidate for the bench should freely countenance such methods. take up another feature of the Herald-Review ar ticle, does Judge Holland believe it possible to so contort the fact .that Mr. McCienahan voted for McKinley in 1896 and then and there accepted republican princi ples, as to secure for himself, Hol land, any advantage? Certainly it is not to be supposed that an assertion in a populist organ, dis regarding facts that have a real and positiye existence, can dis count the judgment of republican representatives assembled in a convention at Aitkin. Republicans suffer no misgiv ings, even if doubt as to the wis dom of the nomination made, does disturb the quietude of Judge Hoi land's reflections. The following resolution was adopted by the re publicans of Hubbard county be fore the Aitkin convention was held: "As republicans and as citizens we recognize in Hon. W S. Mc Cienahan an able attorney and an able gentleman and commend him for the nomination at the Aitkin judicial convention and believe that bis election as judge of the fifteenth district will reflect credit upon the people.
