The Bemidji Pioneer. KAISER & GREELEY. Publishers Bntarcd in the postomce at Bemidji as second-class mutter. rTBM8HED KVBKT THURSDAY {Official Connty and City Paper. FO SENATOR. I With Evans, Clapp, Tavrney and Bixby in the field for the vacancy paused by the death of Cushman K. :Davis, the State of Minnesota will not 'suffer for a suitable representative in the United States senate. All of them ar good men, fit and capable forHfce office, and Evans and Clapp wouli* either of them race the place with suitable dignity and talent. But 'neither of them would wear out his bones trying to get things for his State. Tawney has some of the kind capacity needed by Minnesota, and has an earnest way of "going after" anythmg he takes in hand in a way that insures succss. He may not have \as much eloquence or learning as Gen. t!lapp but he does push and drive his measures to a conclusion. Just what (measures Tom Lowry could or would father, no one can tell. But he is not in the race. Tarns Bixby is by all odds the most !promising of all the candidates. He iha* swarms of friends in every county iitt the state, and while in the minds of 'the people he has suffered himself to ibe belittled by not taking thought unto himself and growing either a 17- lineh collar measure or a 200-pound ltip 1 on the scales, he has nevertheless shown such a marvelous talent and 'love for work,- work that counts and wins, that be is generally recognized by the politicians of the state as the ablest of that class in the state. And tit will surprise us a good deal if his powers of organization fall short of bringing him a seat in the next United States senate at this time. As a sena- 1 tor he would stir up the lions, and i help forward the general policy of the I republican administration, and would lake an active interest in the practical Vonwrns of the State of Minnesota. The PJOWKTOt btutfahft for the worker. i ft-is coming. We doubt if the day can be many years away when the government must assume control of the railroads. The constant report of concentration of railroad interests and th,* gmawing- appetite of such corpora tions to absorb the sweets of life wilhJ out a decent respect for the rights of the people, is a drawing argument for their subjugation. The latest re port is that the various big lines are reaching a mutual agreement whereby with lessing competition they will be enabled to discharge. ~A),0 jnen, now employed as soliciting agents*, Of eourse any railroad company has a right to do their business in tne cheap est way consistent with good service. But the tendency is to get together on the "grab and divide'* system, and to hades with their employes and the pub lic. By every such me) ve they are in tensify ing public opinion against them, and are hastening the day when the nation will rise up and take a fall out of the servant which is actually mas ter. The trust question is as difficult to solve as trying to get on the safe side of a polecat. The railroad ques tion is indeed a serious matter and the people have long viewed It seri ously. The advocates of government ownership are multiplying rapidly, and unless conditions change, many of them will soon burst into congress. The Grout oleomargarine bill ought never to become a law. It practically is a Boston tea party to the "oleo" industry. The cremwries of the state are not entitled to the scalp of any rival. So long as oleomargarine is not unhealthy and is cheaper than real butter and better than much farm butter, the people who desire that salve to their bread are entitled to have it. Oleomargarine as an imita tion of butter, however, should be se verely dealt with. Every ounce of it should be so lalele that'no deception can be practiced. This warfare against "oleo'* is a narrow one so long as nearly every other article of food is allowed to be adulterated and sold as pure stuff. The Gospel services which hare been held in the Baptist church for the last two weeks will continue through this week and also through the week begin ing January 21st. Kev. F. Lovett, of Park Rapids will preach in the church every night next week. The singing will be in charge of Mr. J. Miller, the Evangelistic singer for Rev. W. B. Riley, of the First Bap tist church, of Minneapolis. Mr. Mil ler will lie with us through this week only. A cordial invitation is extended to the public to attend these services and meet these Christian workers from abroad. The services will be at the usual hour. The world was not built in one day and fame is not made in a second. The title of "the best place to trade at in Bemidji"' was given to W. White & Co.'s Mammoth store after a long service to the public in good bargains and fair treatment given Jhem. REFUSED' A GOO THING. The News rants agains (commis sioner WrigntV'eeonomy'' in allowing thePlONKKK legal rates for the county printing. And questions his honesty, because he failed to fall into the clutches of the Martin syndicate. It is not necessary to answer the News, as the citizens who elected Wes Waight were acquainted with his character as well as they were with the man who [opposed him. .Ii.was an open issue between Wright and Martin then: it is an issue still. If the News has a repu tation for honesty and economy Mr. Wright was certainly wrong in refus ing the tempting offers made him to climb into the News band .wagon. To do so he was offered *300 in legal tender money and an additional 20 per cent of the cost price of the new jail addition. And by the way the plans and specifications for said jail build ing were drawn up and let to the high est bidder at $11,000 and only waited the securing of one commissioner "an honest and economical one" in the eyes of the schemers. But Mr. Wright was not willing to sell himself and the county. He reasoned that he was not elected for that purpose. Those who sought to corrupt Mr. Wright, should take their defeat in silence and not seek to ruin him with lies because he rema'ned true to the citizens who elected him. Musical**. The inusieale given at the City Hall on Jan. 9th under the direction and supervision of the Lady Foresters was a complete success and will always re main a creditable episode in Bemidji's history. The untiring efforts used by the ladies to introduce such a feature of amusement for the music loving people of Bemidji are certainly deserv ing of the highest praise and coramen-' dation. It was well attended and ap preciated by all. Every turn was detervingly applauded, andmany were compelled by the vociferous applause to appear again. These enjoyable pastimes not only strengthens the fraternal relations of the order but shows the public harmony that exists among its members and the charatable disposition they have for helping the needy. The Lady Foresters as I un derstand had arranged that part of the proceeds should be donated toward purchasing supplies for the several poor families of our city of which there are many. Just before tha rise of-the curtain, Attorney L* H. Bailey, master of cere monies, stepped to the footlights and with dome very nattering remarks on growth and prominent standing of the order was encouraging. He dwelt par ticularly upon the necessity of the people of Bemidji getting up more entertainments ojf its kind in_ the .future as. a means -of bringing the peo ple together in a -social way. I, as one of an appreciative au dience, would say that those who took part in the entertainment to make it a a success, are certainly the cream of the amateur talent and should be taken as professionals.. AN OBSERVER. MISUSE O S. MAILS. During the recent Pure Food and Drink Investigation in the Senate, Senator Wiu E Mason made a speech on American cham paigns. He was very compliment, ary to certain brands, and they have used the speech as an adver tisement. Copies of it have been sent ail over the country, postage free, because they were stamped with the name of the senator in the corner. This is an unprece dented use of the Senator's name to secure free postage for advertis ing private matter, and, if not stopped, it would soon flood the mails with unpaid packages. "Golden Grain Belt" beer needs no senator's speeches, no illegiti mate advertising to prove its pu rity is a food product' A trial is all that is necessary. It will help you because it has the strength of pure barley malt and hops. Tr a case and be benefited. Order of your dealer or be supplied by FRKT) S. HA/EX. O O 0 Netve Influence Is the subtle force which controls the different organs of the body. I makes them strong or weak, healthy or diseased, according as the brain and nerves arc strong and vigorous or weak and diseased. Weak nerves cause headache, nervousness, neuralgia, indigestion, heart trouble and many other forms of chronic weakness. Make the nerves strong, the brain clear and active and the body will be healthy and vigorous. "Overstrained nerves caused my wife to suffer severely with a nervous affection of the heart called by physicians neuralgia of the heart. Powerful remedies relieved the pain temporarily, but all physicians failed to remove the cause or give permanent relief. A few bottles of Dr. Miles' Nervine together with Dr. Miles' New Heart Cure removed all signs of neuralgia and she has ever since enjoyed excellent health." THOS. O. MARSHALL, North East, Pa. D*. Persons who suffer from indigestion cannot expect to live long, because they cannot eat the. food required to nourish the body and the products of the undigested foods they do eat poison the blood. It is important to cure indigestion as soon as possible, and the best method of doing this }s to use the preparation known as Kddpl Dyspepsia cure.
