Had Mrs. John Sjursen, who lives on a farm six miles north of Lodi, been born but two months earlier, she would enjoy the un usual distinction of having lived in three centuries. As it is, few people can claim such a record as hers, for on Feb. 23,1901, she was 100 years old. She was born in Sogndahl, New Bergen, on the southwest coast of Norway, and lived nearly an aver age lifetime in the old country be fore emigrating with her husband to America, 45 years ago. These sturdy Norwegians settled in the vicinity of Mrs. Sjursen's present home, and there the remainder of of her life has been spent. He husband died 19 years ago at the age of 77. Mrs. Sjursen has three daughters livingMrs. Sylvia Aufson, who resides near Lodi, is 68 years of age, and lives on the old home stead Mrs. Gunder Gunderson, with whom Mrs. Sjursen makes her home, and Mrs. Belle Tweet, wife of Mr. Tweet of the firm of Steidl, Tweet & Sons, who lives in Beniidji, Beltrami county, Minn. The only son, Sjur Sjursen, lived in Madison for a short time, but was drowned in Lake Mendota some 35 years ago in sight of his wife, who stood helpless on the shore. The next oldest in this family group is Mrs. Annie Nelson, a granddaughter, who lives near Lodi, and is the mother of 11 children. She is 48 years old. Next in rank is the great grand daughter, Mrs. John Tysse, who resides in Madison. Her little girl, Evelyn Tysse, was 3 years old in March, and completes the five generations. Sh is great grant granddaughter of Mrs. Sjur sen. Aside from her century record, Mrs. Sjursen is a remarkable woman in many ways. Her health is still good, and she has no trouble in reaching her bedroom upstairs. Her hearing is but little impaired, and glasses are not her constant companions. In fact, she only uses them occasionally. She enjoys knitting, and spends many hours in this almost lost art. Lust fall she rode to Lodi and back the same day, but pre vious to that time had not made the trip for some 12 years. Sh comes fairly by her longevity, for her father lived to be 103 years of age. She is a Lutheran and is a member of Our Savior's Norwegian church at Lodi. Of course, like everyone, she preferred life, and took Cascarine, the great life giver, blood purifier and tonic. Within three weeks she astonished her friends by appearing among them as anew woman.
