In making a beginning with
sheep in Northeast Minnesota
much will depend upon theamount
of previous experience possessed
by the farmer. If he is used to
caring for sheep and understands
their general requirements he can
with more safety import grades or
even full bloods of the improved
mutton breeds. If he has never
handled sheep it would be very,
unwise for him to start with valu
able animals, as with no other
class of stock will correct manage
ment give better results and mis
takes be sooner followed by loss
than with sheep. Common sheep
are nearly all grade merinos, small
of body and with rather light
fleeces of fine wool. Breeding ewes
may be obtained from suoh stock
at stockyards, suitable for use as
a foundation for a flock at much
lower figures than grades of the
mutton or larger bodied and
longer wooled sheep. By select
ing them according to the size and
condition of the teeth none but
young animals need be secured.
Where it is necessary to confine
them entirely to brush, such sheep
will usually thrive somewhat bet
ter than would better bred sheep,
and they will clear the brush out
a little more thoroughly. These
facts and their lesser value make
them .jomewhat more suitable for
beginners on new farms than the
better grades, until tho farmer has.
gained the necessary experience
and the farm is more developed.
But it should be the aim of
every farmer to improve the flock
to grading them up to the mutton
type. Merino grades usually pro
duce and raise but one lamb,
while the mutton breeds commonlv
have twins. As the profit of the
flock lies in its increase, the mut
ton sheep by this one item are
more profitable. Larger carcasses
and heavier fleeces increase this
margin of profit. This result can
be brought about by the use of a
pure bred ram of a mutton breed,
upon the grade merino ewes, sav
ing the ewe lambs and continuing
to breed to a pure bred ram. Two
crosses will usually produce a type
of lamb closely resembling the
full blood. A full grown ram will
serve 100 ewes, and it will pay
neighbors to combine in the pur
chase of such an animal, for if a
grade ram is used the results will
be very much delayed,

"I had a serious attack of bilious

ST. PAUL AND
the street was sick for over a week,
had two or three bottles of medicine
from the doctor. He used them for
three or four days without relief, then
called in another doctor who treated
him for some days without relief, so
discharged him. I went over to see
him the next morning. He said his
bowels were in a terriblefix, that they
had been running off so long that it
was almost bloody flux. I asked him
if he had tried Chamberlain's Colic,
Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy, and
he said 'No.' I went home and
brought him my bottle and gave him
one dose: told him to take another
dose in fifteen or twenty minutes if he
did not find relief, but he took no
more and was entirely cured." For

A GOOD THING.
German Syrup is the special pre
scription of Dr. A. Boschee, a cele
brated German physician, and is ac
knowledged to be one of the most for
tunate discoveries in medicine. It
quickly cures coughs, colds and all
lung troubles of the severest nature,
removing, as it does, the cause of the
affection and leaving the parts in a
strong a healthy condition. It is not
an experimental medicine, but has
stood the test of years, giving satis
faction in every case, which its rapidly
increasing sale every season confirms.
Two million bottles sold annually.
Boschee's German Syrup was intro
duced in the United States in 18i8 and
is now sold in every town and village
in the civilized world. Three doses
will relieve any ordinary cough. Price
75 cents. Get Green's prize almanac,

Bees and Alfalfa.
The introduction of alfalfa into
Kansas has made the state richer
by one million dollars, and the
honey bees that feed on alfalfa
have added another million. A
peculiar thing about this grain is
that some insect must distribute
the pollen in order to produce the
seed. The bee is the best insect to
do this, and therefore it is as valu
able to the alfalfa as the alfalfa is
to the bee. More valuable to men
than alfalfa and bees is "Golden
Grain Belt" beer, for it brings
them health and happiness.
