Mavo. Winter^ Rye. Winter rye is one of the most useful general crops that can be grown in this section. The work of the experiment station has demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt that this crop is welladapted to Northeast Minnesota. Winter rye has been grown every year for five years and has never shown in jury from winter killing. In prairie sections to the west of us the exposure due to the blowing away of snow during the winter often causes failure, but the pro tection against winds and more abundant snow fall will generally insure a crop wherever timber is prevalent. Winter rye may be put to a number of uses, all of which are and timely. It makes an early growth in spring and is ready for pasture at least three weeks in advance of ordinary grasses. If pastured off it will come on again, provided the stock are removed for a few days, and can be browsed until it begins to shoot. Winter rye may also be cut for hay. The best time to cut is soon after the heads form, while the food materials which afterwards are collected in the seed are still distributed eveuly through the straw. If favorable weather is secured for sowing it.will make good hay for horses and cattle. The seed, when ripened, makes excellent feed for hogs or chickens, and if properly fed, does well for horses. The one important poin,t in the culture of winter rye, necessary to best success, is to sow the seed early in the fall. or the latitude of Grand Rapids the seed should be in the ground by Aug. 15. For regions as far north as Mora or Hinckley a week to ten days later will do no harm. Rye will grow if sown much later than this but every week's de lay means a lessening of the crop next spring. Should the plants in a warm season show signs of shooting they may be plastered off with sheep, or, if the ground is dry, cattle. The long period of growth in autumn forms vigorous plants, which stand the winter without injury. One and one-quarter bushels to one and one-half bushels of seed per acre is sufficient. Rye will grow on almost any soil and will yield a crop on much poorer soil than any other grain. HERMAN CHAPMAN. SIDEWALK NOTICE.
