P. M. Burington, a resident of Be

trip in the southern part of the state,
spent a few days in the city, leaving
for home yesterday. He may decide

With the approach of spring" the
boatmen are overhauling their crafts
for business. It is said that George
Reynolds will soon receive a new
forty-foot gasoline launch. The Shad
ow will be missing this season, it hav
ing been taken to Turtle lake.
During the past week eleven differ
ent persons made inquiry at the
PIONEER office for houses to rent. "I
can get along for a while with 'most
any kind of a house" is a common re
mark. Anyone with money will find
building houses for rent in Bemidji a
most profitable investment.
At the meeting of the village coun
cil Monday night, John Pogue was
appointed street commissioner, J. F.
Hennessy scavenger and Hubert
Wilms keeper of the village cemetery.
The village printing was awarded to
the PIONEEK, provided it would ac
cept it at the same price paid last
year.
Rev. Thomas Broomfield, formerly
of Armagh, Ireland, and recently of
Fairfax, Minn., will preach in the
Baptist church next Lord's Day, April
13, and is expected to settle here as
pastor. Mr. Steinhoff will thus be re
lieved and enabJed to push his mis
sionary work. Come to the service
next Sunday and hear the new pastor.

from the kick of a horse as to be

looks pale, but then he has been do

ness. His wife, who has been in the

terday.
The annual congregational meeting
of the directors of the Presbyterian
church was held Monday evening.
The financial condition of the society
was shown to be most healthyall

proposition to build a new and large
ghurch edifice was discussed.
A full" house greeted Dave Picket
and his negro company Tuesday
night and the audience were glad to
be there. Dave was as good as
usual, and without doubt he is the
funniest negro comedian on the stage
to-day. John White was a close
second for fun, and a superior singer.
Little Bulah white has a sweet voice
and shows promise of ripening into a
clever actress. The whole show was
clean and of high character.
What threatened to be a serious fire
was happily diverted by the prompt
action of the fire boys yesterday after
noon. Fire caught in the attic of the
Miles building, corner of Third and
Minnesota, and spread to the second
floor. The hydrant at O'Leary's
corner was frozen, but connections
were speedily made at two others and
two streams soaked the building from
roof to cellar. The upper floors were
badly damaged and several hundred
dollars worth of bedroom furnishings
destroyed.

Michael Laugh 1 in and Nettie Win
ters were married a few days ago. and
yesterday the groom was mourning
the disappearance of his wife aud $200
of other property.
Twelve families were quarantined
in Bemidji township, south of here,
Tuesday by Dr. Blakeslee. A social
gathering was held at the home of E.
L. Waldron's,and the 12 families were
exposed by a smallpox patient who
was among the Invited guests.
L. H. Bailey has associated with
hita a partner, M. A. Spooner, of
Minneapolis. For some time the latter
has been located at Brainerd, and the
Dispatch of that city gives him the
following recommendation: Mr.
Spooner is a lawyer of ability and
during his short stay in this city made
many friends who will regret to hear
that he is to leave. The firm of
Bailey & Spooner will, however, make
a strong combination, as both gentle
men are well known in this part of the
state.
A Sudden Summons.
Mrs. Ida May, wife of John A.
Mitchol, of Buena Vista, died in Be
midji, Thursday, April 3rd, at the age
0f 28 years. She leaves a husband
and four children, the youngest two
years.
She had returned from* Minneapolis
ihe previous Friday. Her starting
for home before she had rallied from
a surgical operation there probably
hastened her death.
.Her mother, Mrs. Jas, Brutton of
Hunter, N. DM and a sister, Mrs.
John Hunter of Manitoba, were pres
ent at the funeral which took place
Saturday. She was interred in Green
wood cemetery.
The deceased was born in Napance,
Onturlo, and was married to John
Mitchell eleven years ago. They have
been in the states for the past eight
year and at Buena Vista over two
years. Tbey have many friends here
who will weep at this sudden taking
off.
