The Dancing club gave their last of the season dance at the Redman hall last night. About fiftaen couple were in attendance. The young people had a most enjoyable time. Manager Wheelock has received a communication from the During's Lady Quartette in regard to playing here in June. This will be a rare musical treat if they are secured. A reporter for THE PIONE ER thought he had discovered an news item when passing a popular tonsorial parlor this morning, but on investigation the brilliancy of the interior was found to have been caused by the beautiful au "bunn locks of a popular Bemidjite, which had been ruthlessly shorn, and for which the tonsorial artist ex pects there will be a brisk demand as soon as Tom's friends learn of it. It is reported on good authority that new developments are about to be disclosed in the Merchants hotel watch robbery which took place here several weeks ago. It will be remembered that time pieces to the value of $1,400 Vere extracted from a satchel belong ing to a Minneapolis jeweler by the name of Anderson, who at once off ered a reward of $200 for the arrest of those implcuted. Some of the watches have been located and an arrest has been made.Blackduck American. Grand Forks Lumber Company Is Sounded Out By the Commercial Club. The Commercial club of this city1 Alaskan Timber Belt. The federal government has sent W. A. Langhill ofTacoma,Wash.,an expert timber cruiser, north for the purpose of cruising and mapping the timber belt of southern Alaska. He is accompanied by Collector of Cus toms Jarvis of Sitka. Langhill will be the first cruiser sent to Alaska for this purpose. He will probably work as far north as Skagway this year. Other cruisers will follow him a? the territory to be covered is vast. According to Law. The viilage treasurer, Mr. Brooks, adopted a method of paying off orders as soon as he assumed his office. The following is quoted to show he has hit upon the proper method: "A act to amend section 1219 of the general statutes of 1894, providing for duties of village officers and payment of orders was passed by the last legislature, and reads: All village orders shall be paid in the order that they are now or may here after be registered, out of the first moneys that come into the village treasurer's hands for such norpose." New Blacksmith Shop. Chas. H. Reed has leased the black smith shop one door south of THE PIONEER now occupied by the Be midji Wagon Works, and will take possession May 17th. Mr. Reed is a thorough workman and needs no in troduction to the people of this vicin ity. He makes a specialty of 'horse shoing, and will guarantee satisfact ion to all. At present Mr. Reed is occupying temporary quarters at Smart's place and reports a very bright outlook. Reduced Rates to Canada. We have just completed arrange ments with the Canadian immigration agent to furnish reduced railroad tickets to all poiDts in Manitoba, As siniboi, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Duluth, April 29.A blizzard is raging here, prostrating the street car business, causing three saw mills to shut down and delaying trains. Nolan passed through the city last night enroute to Minneapolis. H. C. Kincannon this morning pur chased of Street & Gibbons, lot four in block ten in the original townsite for $500. "A Thoroughbred Tramp A PROPOSITION IS MADE. CHIPPEWA TIMBER SALES made a proposition to the Grand Forks Lumber company in regard to rebuilding their saw mill, which was recently de stroyed by fire at East Grand Porks. This mill would be a most im portant addition to Bemidji's in dustrial interests, and would mean the distribution of some $20,000 monthly among our mer chants, and quite an addition to our population. Theresultoftheconfercn.ee be tween the committee of the Com mercial club sent from here and the company's representatives, Messrs. McCoy and Rickerd, has not been made public, but it is understood that the latter have takenjthe jDrqposition under ad visement. The Commercial club is cer tainly alert to the interests of Bemidji and should receive the the support it richly deserves. 4 promises to be one of the cleverest things of the season. Patrons of the Bemidji opera house should not miss the opportunity of witnessing this attraction. A. E. Smith sold a lot in the Mill Park addition to Geo. Pillow of Min neapolis today. Mr. Pillow will erect a resedence on same and move his family to this place this spring. Messrs. Schroeder and Lang showed the water power site on the Mississippi river to Mr. A. S. Epperson who came here from Kansas City for the Kansas City Star, for the purpose of investigating the water power with the idea of purchasing the same and erect ing a pulp mill. It was found that the conditions admitted of the cheap construction of the dam and other improvements and an easy route was found for a spur .from the M. & I. line to the site. The Will be Ready At An Early Date for Advertising iminary Work. I was sriven out at the general land office in Washington yester day that the preliminary office work of estimating the amount of timber, etc on the ceded Chip pewa land is progressing so ra p idly that-it is almost certain that everything will soon be in readi ness to issue advertisements for proposals for the purchase of the timber. Commissioner Richards is much pleased at the progress which is being made, and will seek to further aoo4erato the pace during his coming visit to the Chippewa country. John O'Donnell, state labor commissioner, and his deputy. W. Hammond, are in Washing ton attending the meeting of the American associati on of statistic ians. ACCIDENT A FOSSTON. Two Boys Have Narrow Escape From Death Near That Place Yesterday. A accident befell two lads at Fosston yesterday that narrowly escaped being a double fatality. The lads were sons of Christo pher Hogan, who lives three miles north of Fosston. and were aged 10 and 18 years. The lads went to the village to do some trading, and while crossing the railroad between two sections of the local freight train the cars were backed together. Being unable to get the horses under way in time to.escape, the boys jumped just as the wagon was struck and smashed into kindling wood. The horses were not uninjured. SQUADRON COMINGTHOME. Pacific War Fleet Will Greet the Pres ident in San Francisco". San Francisco, April 30.Within a few days the Pacific squadron will ar rive in port from a long cruise that has extended as far south as Hon duras. The flagship New York, flying the pennant of Rear Admiral Glass, and the cruisers Boston, Marblehead and Ranger, are in company, and have just sailed from San Diego. Upon its return the fleet will be placed in orders, preliminary to the visit of President Roosevelt. BRITISH COMMISSION MEETS. Prince of Wales Speaks for a Good Exhibit at St. Louis. London, April 30. The British royal commissioners to the St. Louis exposition held their first meeting at Marlborough house. The prince of Wales, who presided, made a speech, during which he pointed out the ob jects the commission had in view and expressed the hope that Great Britain would be adequately represented at the exhibition. Irving M. Scott Is Dead. San Francisco, April 30.Irving M. Scott, who for many years was vice president and general manager of the Union iron works, died at his home in this city yesterday afternoon. He has been in poor health for some time. Embezzled $94,000. Atlanta, Ga., April 30.G. Secretary Hitchcock yesterday received a copy of the resolution passed by the Thief River Palls city council relative to Major Scot t. Indian airont at Loeeh Lake. 'The resolution set forth that in the qpfoion of the council Maj Scot t, in opposing the ratifica tion of the Ke Lake treaty, is goin^ outside his official duties.
