VOLUME 1. NUMBER 21. TO FIGHT TREAFY OPPOSED O CANAL PROP- OSITION. PRESIDENT IS FORCE!* OU OWING O POLITICAL TROUBLES. FRIENDS Of CANAL ANXIOUS FEAR THAT HIS SUCCESSOR IS UNFRIENDLY O THE PROJECT. Washington, May 13. Private ad vices from Colombia state that there are three elements opposed to ratifica tion of the Panama canal treaty. Onft element antagonizes the feature giving the United States perpetual control another urges that the indemnity and annuity is not sufficient, and the third element consists of revolutionary spirits who fear that with the Colom bian treasury enriched by $10,000,000, the government's strength will be 'so increased as to destroy all hope of suc cess from any revolutionary move ment. Dr. Herran. the Colombian charge d'affaires here, is without oificial in formation regarding the attitude of the majority of the members-elect to the congress. President Forced Out. Panama, May 12It is reported here that President Mairoquin has been compelled to resign office on account of political troubles, and that Gen Raphael Reyes, seoord vice president of Colombia, will ass .me the presi dency. Friends of the canal are anx iously awaiting confirmation of this report. The convocation of the Colombian congress for June 20 is believed by those acquainted with government af fairs to mean that President. Marro-" quin is confident of having sufficient support to assure approval of the canal treaty. Gen. Raphael Reyes returned to Colombia last March from Mexico City, where he represented Colombia at the second international conference of American states. When interviewed at Colon He Spoke Guardedly THREE ELEMENTS IN COLOMBIA the ease cf the ftriited States vs. Wei Northern Sectmties.J'o.m.pan'y, recently HE IS COMPELLED TO RESIGN Ex-Atiorifey General Griggs, Francis on the matter of the Hay-Herran ^on-1 found Strand on the kitchen floor, vention. and was not disposed to dis cuss the probability of its ratification by the Colombian congress. He seemed to have reason to believe that the recent interpretation of the United States of its obligatory rights to maintain free transit across the isthmus, and its manner of enforcing these rights had created a very un favorable impression throughout Colombia. He said "the politicians who would be called upon to decide the fate of the canal would not be likely to forget the humiliating inci dents that occurred during the recent insurgent hostilities on the isthmus. Gen. Reyes, however, in no way ex pressed himself as opposed to the con struction of the canal by the United States. SWEPT FIRE. Valuable Property Is Destroyed in Pennsylvania. Latrobe. Pa..
