The ex treme diligence exercised by the local police department in guarding Presi dent Roosevelt during his journey through and brief visit in Ooakland was the subject of much comment Thursday, and this extraordinary pre caution is now explained by the^ fact, not heretofore known to the public, of information received by the authori ties of a plot, which, carried out, would have meant the assassination of Presi dent Roosevelt in this city. Late Wednesday night Mayor Olney re ceived a communication signed "K. N.," stating that two men named Charles Girardo and Antonio Poli vinco, the latter an Italian who tried to kill the emperor of Austria before St. Stephen's church in Vienna, May 13, 1867, had agreed to meet at Gi rardo's house to discuss the killing of the president. The writer added: "I heard that Girardo was in corres pondence with Czolgosz at Los An geles." The letter was referred to the po* lice, who decline to discuss the matter. In the Yosemite Valley. Raymond, Cal., May 16.President Roosevelt arrived here yesterday morning for a four days' stay in the Yosemite valley and the big tree re gion. Though somewhat fatigued by the arduous program in San Francisco, the president finds much contentment in the prospect of a quiet time in the valley and forests until next Monday night. Throws Pepper in His EyesNo Seri ous Damage Done. Cincinnati, May 17.Displeased over the outcome of a case in police court yesterday morning Mrs. A. E. Leland. aged thirty-eight years, tried to blind Judge William H. Lueders in his office late yesterday afternoon by throwing cayenne pepper into his eyes. He was hastily taken to the hospital, where the physicians stated that no serious damage had been done. Judge Lue ders says he will not prosecute the woman. PREFERS POISON. Murderer Commits Suicide on the Morning of His Execution Day. Lexington, Ky., May 17. William McCarty, wife murderer, who was to be hanged yesterday morning, took morphine some time during the night and died at 8:15 in the morning. The death watch, Alexander McKeever, sat within three feet of McCarty all night, but he says he is absolutely at a loss to know how or when he took the drug. GERMOND PLEADS GUILTY. Forger Is Sentenced to Serve Three Years at Hard Labor. New York, Mav 17,Philip C. Ger mond pleaded guilty to forgery and was sentenced to.three years at hard -labor at Sing Sing. Germond was ar rested in Wilkesbarre, Pa., a few days ago, after being traced about the country, where it is alleged he had passed a number of bad checks on hotels. The specific case oa which he was convicted was the passing of a worthless check for $150 in this city. PERISH IN THE NIGHT. Lives Lost in a Chicago Apartment Building Fire. Chicago, May Ifi.Two lives were lost in the fire that destroyed the Westchester apartment building at 5017 Cottage Grove avenue early yes terday.
