CANADA AND THE TARIFF. Over in'Canada tliey-Have been doing some ^^mg^'IE^^'tW scared half out of their boots at, the manner in which the Yan kees are capturing the home| markets. One of the ^reasons why John Bull maintains colonies is to af ford an outlet for British goods. But Canada prefers American goods to the extent of. $125,000,- 000 in .the year ended June 80, 1902, and exports from the United States to Canada are in creasing at the rate of nearly one million dollars a month. I ports from Canada are nearly stationary, the increase for the year being obout $2,000,000. The remedy, according to the Canadian journals, is a protectee tariff, and they would clap it on so tight and strong that the Yan kees would be barred out for ever. The makers of tariffs are mostly selfish. Seldom do they consider the pockets of the peo ple. The Canadians do not buy American goods because they love America, but because they like the goods. In nearly every home there is a shrewd buyer who wants tlie best at the lowest price, and doesn't care a hang where tfae article was made or grown. Why should the people l)e stopped from getting the good goods at low prices simply be cause the English and Canadian manufacturers have not been able to catch the Yankee stride? The United States, a high-tar iff nation, has prospered. The^e are thousands of wise men, stu dents of political economy, prac tical business nien, who will as sert that a high tariff is a good thing for the few and a burden for the many that the United States has prospered in spite of, not because the government of ficials who take tolls at the ports of the nation. Canada should figure some more.St. Paul Daily News. CONGRESSMAN STEENERSON is too strong to be sat upon. He refuses to be bound by the land office location at Cass,Lake, and has induced President Roosevelt to have, the whole matter opened up before the Commissioner of the general land office. We aie glad of it. Bernidji is the rlgiit place for it. The office in Cass Lake would be like placing a piano in a deaf and dumb asylum. Bernidji is the choice of the settlers in the homestead belt.
