Cardinal Sarto, the patriarch of Venice, is the choice of the cardinals' conclave to succeed Pope Leo XIII, and he has as sumed the potificate, taking the title of Pius X. Pro in what can be learned regarding the career and characteristics of the new pope, his selection appears to have been an eminently wise one, and it is extremely probable that he will carry out the same policy that was pursued by Leo XIII. Cardinal Sarto enjoyed great popularity in his diocese, and has been honored by all for his purity, for the straight upright ness of his life, and for liberal ideas. He is said to be a modest and agreeable man, higaly culti vated, very kind-hearted, and al though 68 years of age, is strong and robust and fully able to as sume the heavy burdens of the papacy. He has never taken any great part in the political and public life of the church, but divided his time between study and good works. Although most faithful to the holy see he was on very friendly terms with the late King Humbert of Italy and has enjoyed the esteem of the present king and the Italian government. Consequenty there is not likely to be any serious trouble between the Vatican and quirinal while Pius lives. He was considered among the more liberal members of the Italian episcopate and sacred college, and it is said that Leo XIII al ways thought very highly of him. The election of Cardinal Sarto may be regarded as a defeat for the Intransigents, chief among whom stands Cardinal Rampolla, who has been secretary of the state for many years. Many re garded Rampolla as the probable successor of Leo. He has many enthusiastic admirers, and also many bitter enemies, his chief -weakness lying in the fact that he openly denounced the "triple alliance" and therefore was not acceptable to Germany, Italy or Austria. But for his uncompro ming attitude, he might have succeeded in his ambition. The interests of the ch urch, however, may be better advanced by Sarto, who is free from all political en tanglements, and liberal in his ideas. Pope Pius will undoubt edly prove an able successor Leo XIII. Dultith Evening Herald.
