UNFAVORABLE SEASON. The very unsatisfactory and unusual weather conditions the paat season have drawn kicks of all sorts from the press through out the country. The old cry of "unusual weather" whenever climatic conditions do not happen to be to our liking was certainly never better justified than it has been this year. Throughout Minnesota and the Northwest the summer has been a dismal excuse for regulation weather. There has been a combination of low temperature and heavy pre cipitation the like of which is not remembered by the oldest in habitant. It has been nearly im possible to get three days of good summer weather in succes sion. Cold winds and cold rains have been succeeded by some hours of hot, muggy weather, only to breed a thunder shower that was followed by another drop in temperature. The effect of this u-pon human comfort, especially upon that of those who sojourn at our lakes and elsewhere in the country has been very great. The growing grain contended against unfavor able conditions from the outset, and for the most part contended successfully. It was thought that the crop would be short, but falling off was not so great, it is said, as to work material injury. But the harvest season, also, has b2en interrupted. The cutting and threshing of the grain has had to be done the intervals, and unquestionably the quality of the wheat has suffered thereby. The harvest hands have also suf fered, for they could not work on rainy days, and were forced to lay around idle much of the time when they had expected to be earning good wages. NOT BARK EATERS. A game warden has ventured into the Little Fork valley and Editor McPhorson warns his subscribers in the following fashion "The game warden is a genial fellow by the name of Archie Phillips of St. Louis county. He is a good exponent of the game law. He went away this morn ing but his eyes are yet upon us. He is neither a fool nor a coward. Look out for him. He tasted a wild flavor on the viands he ate here, and lie knows the differ ence between mutton chops and caribousa. He can tell the fan like tail of the partride from the wing of a clove. He enjoyed the taste of our food, and he will come back again. When he does we shall have to feed him on the same food or let him starve. We have in us a touch of the spirit of philantrophy, enough that we shall feed him if he should put us in jail for doing so. But let us be wise enough to burn the partridge feathers, and bury in to the ground heads and antlers with the hides of big game. We hope not to go on record as violators of any just laws, and we hope too that we shall not be compelled to eat bark. HE state board of equalization has found that Minnesota has $534,898 worth of dogs. The total number assessed was 106,- 898. If the assessors can find the ownors of all the dogs in Be midji they are welcome to what ever they can collect. HE Crookston Times says that since Cass Lake feels so good Bemidji must have hid it considerably worried. NEWS IN BRIEF. Overflow From the Wires in a Con densed Form. Col.
