GREAT NORTHERN REPORT. Commenting on the Great "Northern^ report the Commer cial Advertiser says: "The earning capacity of the Great Northern increases at the same remarkable rate it has shown for a number of years past. It proves that the optim ism of Hill with regard to the value and earning capacity of the property was justified. The property continues to hold the record for economical operation." Discussing the matter of freight rates, the paper says: "Results as shown by the Great Northern indicate that its rates have been made with a view bo hurry rather than to re tard industrial development on its lines." According to the official figures the total gross earnings for the Great Northern were $42,137,- 600. The opeiating expenses were only $20,897,335, leaving net earnings of $21,240,335, or nearly 51 per cent of the gross earnings. This is even a larger proportion of net earnings than was reported by the Northern Pacific, which in turn was very much larger than the production reported by the Chicago and Northwestern and the St. Paul roads, The Oreat Northern report states that the apparantly grati fying exhibit was made possible through the large expenditures made for the reduction of grades, for more powerful locomotives and for cars of greater capacity. A dispatch from New York states that Wall street is unable to figure out, however, in spite of the official figures given, how either the Northern Pacific or Great Northern is able to report such a large proportion of net earnings, if the companies have been purchasing sufficient loco motives and cars to handle their increased traffic and expending sufficient money to keejj the roadbed and equipment up to the standard of such roads as the St. Paul and the Chicago and Great Western. CHANGE IN MANAGEMENT. Eight years ago in February the Bemidji Pioneer was estab lished. With the growth of Be midji it has grown it has con tributed its share toward the making of Bemidji it is today the leading newspaper in this section of northern Minnesota. The Pioneer was established by Edward Kaiser and has been un der his management since its be ginning. Desiring to retire from newspaper work Mr. Kaiser has disposed of the plant and good will of the Pioneer to the Pioneer Publishing Company, a corpora tion, and possession by the com pany will be taken in a few days. Mr. Kaiser will retain an interest but the paper will be under the exclusive control and manage ment of R. W. Hitchcock, one of the members of the new com pany and for several years past editor of the Crookston Times. The new company has ample capital, and the plant will be en larged and every improvement will' be added needed to give Be midji a newspaper equal to any paper in the state outside of the big dailies of the twin cities and Duluth. Further particulars will be announced when the actual transfer of possession is made. Why is it that Daily Pioneer want ads bring such good results? NEWS IN BRIEF.
