Over Two Hundred Residences Built During the Summer of 1903. It is doubtful if there is an other town in Minnesota that can show a growth during the year of 1903 that will compare with that of Bemidji, and it will no doubt be news to many people in this city to know that a conserva tive estimate puts the total amount of money expended in this city during the building sea son that is just about to close at 1300,000. There is no better index to the growth and prosperity of any city than the amount of money which is annually expended in building improvements. The Pioneer is not in a position at present to give exact figures. The compiling of data of this sort would require avast deal of work which the paper is not in a posi tion to give at the present time. From local building contractors it is learned, however, that over 200 residences have been built in tihis city during the. past season. Placing the average cost of each at $1,000, a total of $200,000 is ob tained. Many of the residences cost considerably Over the aver age figure and there are many moreover it than under the mark, so that $1,000 is held by the best authority which the paper has been able to secure as aconserva tive average. It is then estimated that $75,000 has been expended in building new business blocks, and the authority which the paper has for| this is none less than Bert DeKeck, the well known Crookston architect, who has drawn the plans for most of the business buildings erected here this summer and is well familiar with the work in that line which has been going on. Aside from this theie have been a large num ber of miucr improvements, and to attempt to enumerate them all would be well nigh an endless task. It is estimated that these will amount to fully $25,000, and the grand total of all is thus placed at $300,000. For a city of 5,000 this is some thing of a record, but all indica tions are for a much busier sea son in the building line next year than this, while the present sea son takes rank undoubtedly as the first in the history jf Be midji. The conditions this year have not been as favorable as they have been in some of the years past, either. The market value of building material has been somewhat higher and dur ing the summer, months labor was scarce and, comparatively speaking, high. The Pioneer does not believe there is another town in the state that can equal this record. Government Sends Headstones. R. H. Carr, Post No. 174 G. A. R., this week received from the government two headstones which are to be placed at the head of the graves of two of the old soldiers buried in the G. A. R. plot at Greenwood. The stones will be placed in position some time this week. Several more are expected to arrive in the near future. The headstones are made of the finest Vermont mar ble and are very neat in finish and design. The inscription is done by machinery and gives the name, company and regiment which the veterans served during the war. Advertise in the Pioneer
