The people of Minnesota will watch with much interest the at tempt of the state to make good its title to the valuable swamp lands of Northern Minnesota. Although less than fifty acres is involved in the claim of the state\ which will be argued at Washington within two weeks it is estimated that a decision favor able to the state will mean an ad dition of $1,000,000 to the state's strong box in one royalties alone. The state apparently has a very good claim to these lands. The United States surveyor general has given it as his official opinion that the state's claim is a just one. From this decision Wisconsin parties have appealed, and upon the appeal arguments yriU. be heard at Washington Hov, 13. Minnesota is richly endowed with valuable lands, but in one -way and another it has lost much thai should rightfully belong to it today. The present swamp land contest is but one of several and should the state win out in this, it stands an excellent chance of winning out in all. ALTHOUGH Bob Dunn never ties himself down with promises ib is pretty safe to gamble that Tsrhen he gets to be governor Sam Johnson's career as public ex aminer will come to a sudden and a timely end. No man in the state more richly deserves to be put out of the way politically than Johnson. No honest official in the state is safe from out rageous slander so long as John son has the power to hail him be fore a grand jury. No more mischievous man than Johnson ever held an office of trust in Minnescta. ly is safe to say without in vestigation that the story that secretary of the state Peter Hanson has been advocating Bob Dunn for governor is a canard. V^hatever may be the secre tary's personal preferences he is too sensible a man toembarass the administration of which he is a part by any such action. The St. Paul Globe should aspire to a higher plane of .political attack. ..WHATcauses Roosevelt's ene naies a great deal of deep think ing these days is whether they can be so successful in pre venting his nomination next year as they were, in securing it three years ago. HE St. Paul Dispatch has dis covered 15 newspapers that are opposed to Bob Dunn. There are some fifteen hundred news papers all told in the state. I SEEMS that the state game commission overlooked the fact that Minnesota has a supreme court. It knows it now however. Now you may pay your bets. The best advertising medium n Bemidji is the Daily Pioneer everybody reads it. W W BITS I FROM I E NORTHS COUNTRY Hot campaign for sidewalks at Akeley. Wild geese are fattening at Fertile. Famine of school ma'ams in Polk county. Northonae demands a daily mail service and that at jonce. There are drawbacks to great ness and Brainerd finds one of them in labor unions. Bagley waxes yet more pros perous but finds it hard to keep the wolves from its doors. Some fellow who believed in reason in all things has commit ted suicide at Mantrap Lake. The Chisago county grand jury lasted just three hours whereat the people of Chisago are exceed ingly puffed up. Tenstrike people are so thank ful that they will any day think that Eoosevelt and Sam Van Sant will agree upon next month. The Long Prairie Leader rea sonably demands to know "where in tunket we shall get another secretary'of the state fair if E. W. Randall is made governor." Viewing the reputed anxiety of governor, treasurer and secre tary of state for a third term the Big Fork Compass is persuaded that Minnesota can beat Missouri on hog culture. The East Grand Forks Courier decants at length upon the evils of the evasion of the liquor laws. The Courier is certainly in a po sition to ,speak as one having authority. Wheelock's Weekly makes the Hon. Frank M. Eddy to say that "as tall oak's from little acorns grow so from a little Eddy may come a whirlpool which shall ne gulf the capitol. Who knows?" V"--' in #T AMUSEMENTS Broadhurst's hilarious suffi ciency, "What Happened to Jones," will be the attraction at the City Opera House tonight, in which are presented MillardReid and Murcna Del mar, two of the cleverest people who have ever been seen in this city. "Brown's in Town" and all the other farce comedies of the stripe have had MILLARD REID and MURENA DELMAR, With What Happened to Jones." large runs, but as a business getter "What Happened toJones" is clearly in the supremacy. The costuming of the piece is a mag nificent effort. It is dazzlingly rich and is always a subject of comment. Aside from its funny features it has merit as a well written bit. The seat sale at Barker's will be clc sad at seven o'clock. DON CAESAR DE BAZAN. Tells the story of the beautiful gypsy girl, Maritana, who is sought by the king of Spain, and the ragged cavalier, Don Caesar, who is married to her fifteen minutes before he is to be exe cuted. In fact, the whole play is full of dramatic interest and startling situations, and combin ing as it does a great deal of sparkling comedy, makes one of the most fascinating plays ever presented by Mr. Sanford Dodge, who wiil, with an excellent com pany, produce this great drama at the City Opera House Tuesday evening, Nov. 3. Seats will be on sale at usual place. Crookstoh Lumber Companly i i S AT CR00KST0N BEMIDJI S T. The gruesome record of Lake Bemidji is recalled by the recent supposed drowning of Glenn Adams and Charles Gregory. During the past twoyearsnoless than twenty people have met death by drowning in the lake. There are two or three cases of double drownings, a case of triple drowning and on the 17th of May, 1902, five people lost their lives. Several swimmers have been drowned in the lake who were considered among the best jand there seems to be a hoodoo connected with the beautiful sheet of water somewhere. Lum bermen, the Indians and oldresi dedts of this vicinity say that there is a strong undercurrent in certain sections of the lake, which may be responsible for the fact that people who get into the water rarely get out of it.
