The lumber trade throughout the Northwest has been excep tionally good for the past two years. Every man who has had to do any building is very well apprised of this fact, for lumber has been higher than for many years. The demand, moreover, has taxed the resources of the big lumber companies. For the past three months, however, the lumber trade has not been so good. But despite the fact that Wall street is still actively at work to depress prices and curtail trade in itssides campaign against' Roosevelt, there are signs that the lumber trade is picking up and that it will be fully as strong next spring as for the past two sea sons. Prices are as good as at any tiSqae during the season, and it is believed that the brief and com paratively insignificant period of depression is at an end. THE BUDDING CITY. The Pioneer is glad to see that there is a determination on the part of the people of Bemidji to put off the swaddling clothes of infancy and put on the more suitable garments of manhood. It is time that Bemidji, in reality a city, ceased to use the village form of government. We believe there is no division of sentimentTas to the advisability of adopting a charter and incor porating as a city, and we regret that there should be a division as to the proper mode of incorpora tion. But either of the two methods proposed is better than the present form of government, and we congratulate the people of Bemidji upon the prospect of aruearly change for the better. AMUSEMENTS Sanford Dodge in Don Ceasar De Bazan will be the attraction at the City Opera House tonight. Mr. Dodge is always successful in his presentations. His Ingomar is on record as one of the very best things seen at the local house. His Virginias was an ef fort that won popular approval and demonstrated him an actor in every way capable of aspiring to a correct, pleasing and intelli gent interpretation of the legiti mate drama and in Don Ceasar De Bazan he is said to be at his best. Mr. Dodge always carries a streng supporting company. The nature of his productions de mand it and in staging and carry ing them to the high standard of excellence which is characteristic of all his efforts, neither time, pain or money is spared. Miss Zella Zee Leslie, who has been the leading lady in all Mr.Dodge's productions for the past ten years and who is a capable ac tress of more than ordinary ability, is still with the comp ny. Miss Leslie's work is always ap preciated and in the engagement of Mr. Dodge there is a treat in store for the local theatre goers which none should miss. The Sanford Dodge company will be seen here in "Hamlet" to morrow night. DROPPED A HUNDRED FEET. Three Workmen Killed at East Provi dence, R. I. Providence, R.
