5 The Daily Pioneer PUBLISHED EVERY AFTERNOON. PIONEER PUBLISHING CO. By R. W HITCHCOCK. Entered In the 'postofflce at Bemidji, Minn., as second class matter. Official County as i City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR 1903 NOVEMBE 1903 So., Mo, We. i 2 9 15 16 22 29 23 30 The Pioneer has been loath to believe that Governor Van Sant actually aspires for the third time to become a candidate for his hiarh office, but his persistent silence, now broken by a most significant declaration as to the manner of man whom the repub licans of Minnesota must nom inate for governor, gives grave color to the third term rumor. Governor Van Sant has seoutbrake" himself to make the merger the issue in the coming campaign. His recent interview, in which he declares that no man can be nom i lated by the republicans of this state unless he stands squarely upon an anti-merger platform, is the open beginning of an effort to make the merger alive issue, the livieliest issue, in fact, in the choice of a governor to succeed himself. Could Van Sant ac complish this he might hope to once more lead his party, or fail ing in that,to name his successor. The people of Minnesota have spoken clearly and emphatically in regard to the merger. They want the laws of the state en forced they want the merger to perish from off the map of the state. But they realize also that the merger of the Great North era and the Northern Pacific' railroads is an accomplished fact. and that it will continue regard less of what may be the fate of the Northern Securities com-' pany. They realize that the merging of the two roads under one management is the result of changed economic conditions, and that the important thing now is io make laws which shall meet and control these conditions. We have begun to see that the thing to do is not to kill great business enterprises but to control them. Governor Van Sant has done his duty. But the merger is not an issue in Minnesota neither is the enforcement of the law, if you please, an issue in'Minne sota. The Pioneer knows of no man, republican or democrat, who is now a gubernatorial possi bility who, as chief executive of the state, would not fearlessly uphold the laws of the state. The governor's scheme to make the merger an issue in the com ing campaign is clever, but futile. SUPERINTENDENT S. P. She is the sort of woman who requires what the milliners, in their most exuberant moods, call "a creation." Talents can be measured to order, and personality is a domi- nating feature of the stage but there is a psychology in the charac- ter of genius that cannot be arranged for mechanically before hand. It was an indisputable distinction that fell upon F. Marion Crawford then he was asked, two years ago, by the great tragedienne, to write a play for her. This article, illustrated from especially posed photographs of Mr. Crawford, is one of the many interesting articles in this month's (November) Metropolitan Magazine (A to) R. H.
