We. 1 8 15 22 29 Th. 2 9 16 23 30 Fr. 3 10 17 24 Today Judge Collins, while highly esteemed by all, is out ofthere touch with the people. From the tone of Judge Collins' an 'nouncement of his candidacy it seems probable that he has as surance of Van Suit's support. But we are not risking our repu tation much when we predict 'that the nominating and electing of the next governor is going to be done by the people of the state and the politicians are not going to have much to do with it. THE INHERITANCE OF THE PI0NEEER. A lot of people are going to turn back from northern Minne sota this month, disappointed. They come expecting to have the richest lands in the world for the asking. They find -that accepting a homestead at the hands of Uncle Sam involves a lot of hard work. Naturally a good many don't like it. If double eagles needed but to be picked from every pine tree northern Minnesota would have been densely peopled years ago. The new lands just opened for settlement are apart of a coun try rich in resources. But be fore man can take a pro lit from the land there are trees to be felled, roads to be cut, and swamps to bo drained. He who aspires to be a home steader must be prepared to win the rich returns here offered by the sweat of his brow. Those who do not relish hard wrork should turn back before they start. tr^V *ff -V 'HP- 'V "V ~*Jr BITS \W JHE PIONEER PUBLISHING CO, U&A*A&AikAikA By R. W. HITCHCOCK.. It is safe to say that the announce ment will be received by the people of Minnesota with com parative indifference. Justice Collins is an able and a highly respected man. He is an ornament to the highest court of the state. His personality and ability have done much to make the supreme court of Minnesota the power it is today. He would make a good governorand so would a great many other estim able gentlemen well known in Minnesota. Time was when Judge Collins might have been a most formidable candidate. Had he consented several years ago to put aside the dignity of themiser bench and make an active cam paign he might, who knows, to day be governor. But Judge Collins waited for the office to seek the man and so many pol iticians got in the way and kicked up such a dust that the office never found the Judge.
