is much gratified because the
state press has said nice things
about Judge Collins since that
able jurist announced his candi
dacy. The Journal Press is op
timistic indeed if it can extract
much comfort from the compli
ments of the state press for "well
nigh everyone of them has been
accompanied by the declaration
that Judge Collins was in no way
particularly fitted to be governor
and that there is no general de
mand for his services in that
capacity.
HE Warren Sheaf thinks that
the candidacy of Judge Collins
will "weakenBob Dunn's chances
of being nominated, they both be
ing from the same district." The
Sheaf should get down its blue
book and study up on congres
sional lines a bit. Judge Collins
and Senator Nelson are from the
same district and if there is go
ing to be any "weakening" as a
result of Collins' candidacy it
seems to be up to either Collins
or Nelson.

so utterly despised by all the
people of the country as John D.
Eockefeller is?" demands the
Todd County Argus. Perhaps
not, but we are willing to wager
a little that the Argus, if oppor
tunity offered, would not hesitate
to put the matter to a practical
test.
It is time to be thinking about
laying in a supply of apples for
the winter. The Bemidji Mer
cantile Co. has a big supply and

should be carefully read.

Inquiry in Opposition to Wcjod's Con
firmation.
Washington, Nov. 20.The inquiry
of the senate committee on military
affairs into the opposition to the con
firmation of the nomination of General
Leonard Wood to be major general in
the army was begun during the day
and the hearing, so far as it has .gone,
was behind closed doors and in ex
ecutive session. Before closing the
dnorr there were exchanges of opin
ion concerning the propriety of mak
ing the proceedings public.

Only Incident of Interest During Ses
sion of Senate.
Washington, 'Nov. 20.The senate
transacted no business in open sos- I
sion beyond the receipt of bills and
petitions. The only incident of TIE
usual character was the appearance of
Carrie Nation and she attracted com
paratively little attention.
An executive session was ordered
at 12:25.
At 1 o'clock the senate adjourned
fnr the rinjr.
MYSTERY BACK OF TRAGEDY.
Double Shooting Affray at Denver
Due to Old Feud.
Denver, Nov. 20.Rev. Father Felix
Lepore, pastor of Mount Carmel Cath
olic church in this city, and Joseph
Sorice of Pittsburg, Pa., who shot eacx
other after a game of cards in the
priest's apartments at the rear of the
church, are reported to be in a dying
condition.
In an ante-mortem statement made

believer! his assailant had been sent
out to Denver for the purpose of kill
ing him. Since his first conversation
with Sorice, when he came to this city
about a month ago, Father Lepore said
he had feared the man and had
that his life was in danger.
Sorice to say a word either to
the district attorney's representatives
or to the detectives. Before coming
to Denver in 1892 Father Lepore con
ducted a banking business in New
York, where, it is said, he failed for
a considerable amount. Among the
creditors, it is said, was Guiseppe
Pasquel, a partner of Joseph Sorice,
who came to Denver with the latter
about a month and a half ago.
Frank Lepore, a nephew of the
priest, said that Pasquel had made a
demand on Father Lepore a few days
ago for $240, which he claimed the
priest owed him. Young Lepore ad
vised his uncle to give the men the
money they demanded, but he did not
do so.
Tt is believed that behind the tragedy
lies a deep mystery extending back to
old times in Italy, which, it is feared,
will never be solved because of the
secretive nature of the Italians.
