others that Governor Van Sant
is particularly good at. He is
the most notable type of the
genius jollier that Minnesota has
ever seen. Governor Van Sant
can lay it on thicker, and with
less offense, when he has a mind
thereto, than most any man we
know of. If the governor's
speeches during the past two
years could be put into a pot and
boiled down there would be
enough concentrated taffy to fur
nish forth every candidate for
office in the state for a good
many years to come. But the
governor mixes a good deal of
truth with his flattery and few
men have of late so truthfully
lauded the great state of Minne
sota as he. The other day he de
clared that some of us would live
to see u,000,000 people in Minne
sota and we firmly believe that he
is right. When that day arrives
the share of northern Minnesota
will be no small portion.
ONE Samuel Fullerton, who
loves notoriety like the duck loves
water is now much exercised in
mind over that Venison dinner
which Congressman Steenerson
gives today to his friends at
Washington. Mi-. Fullerton is
quite sure that the game is con
traband and he does so love a
shining mark that he is breaking
out at column's length in the
twin city papers about the mat
ter. Meanwhile Congressman
Steenerson is getting a lot of
cheap advertising.

ing that his support of Collins is
a, very work-a-day affair. Een
nepin county republicans who
think they are it, are now de
manding of the governor that he
appoint Judge Elliott to succeed
Collins or they will have none of
the latter gentleman for gover
nor. It might have been easier
if the administration had hit
upon somebody from private life
with which to try to defeat
Dunn.

Hanna has become quite an
orator but his best orations have
been the election day returns
for the past few years. For
eloquence they are hard to
match.
HE first report of Secretary
Cortelyou of the department of
commerce is in print. The de
partment has more than proved
the wisdom of its establishment
and the secretary is sanguine of
its increasing importance.
JOHN GOODNOW IS home from
China to answer the charges
made against him. He will make
every effort to be Shanghaied
once more.
