Interest in the contest in Be midji to determine what young lady and three of her friends will go to Duluth next Saturday to see Ben Hur at the Lyceum thea tre at the expense of the Pioneer is at a white-heat. The friends of all three candidates now in the running are each determined that their candidate shall be the fortunate winner of the contest and the finish will furnish plenty excitement for all concerned. The contest at Tenstrike, Tur tle River and Blackduck is if anything hotter than that at Bemidji. Miss Cyr at Tenstrike is making a most gallant fight and is nothing daunted by the rumors of a dark horse at that point. Miss Johnson at Turtle River keeps right on showing unexpected strength" and she will undoubtedly have to be reckoned with at the finish. The great fight up the north line how ever is at Blackduck where there are no less than five candidates and each is determined to win. It is pretty safe to say that noth ing will get away from the Black duck people. Miss Craig at Kelliher is said to have a big bunch of votes in reserve and there are rumors to the effect that there will be some thing doing from Northome Thursday morning. Will Cut This Winter. Strike of Chicago Livery Stable Driv ers Continues. Chicago, Dec. 22.No sign of peace had entered into the livery drivers' strike when the fourth day of the trouble began. Ambulances have come under the ban of the striking pickets, according to reports received from undertakers and liverymen, who de clare that police will be necessary to man the conveyances of the sick as well as those of the dead. A number of extra "business agents" were posted throughout the city dur ing the day by the Livery Drivers' union for the purpose, say the union officials, of preventing interference on the part of union sympathizers with the movement of hearses should the undertakers attempt to substitute them for the black "dead wagons." The undertakers and liverymen are accused by the union officials of seek ing to divert public sympathy from the strikers. Twelve independent undertakers are reported by the union as having signed the wage and hour agreement. DEAD MAN AS IWOTCmivlAN. Peculiar Incident of Street Car Traffic in Des Moines. Des Moines, Dec. 22.Street car 150 pulled into the central depot here dur ing the evening with a dead man for motorman. Motorman Gladstone, after shutting off the current two blocks away, was stricken with apoplexy and sank to the floor lifeless. A few moments before the car had passed down the longest and steepest hill in town, laden with passengers, and had the motorman been stricken there a terrible accident would have resulted. _..
