SMOOTH SCHEME TO DEFRAUD HIM OUT OF VALUABLE CLAIM. Arrested and Jailed For Tress passing on His Own Property. Jesse Freestone, the son of a gentleman, who is well known in Bemidji and formerly conducted the City hotel here, is in a very great deal of trouble at Grand Rapids and if all reports are true he has been the victim of one of the biggest and most un scrupulous jobs ever perpetrated on a homesteader in this section. Some time ago Freestone filed on a claim in the Koochiching country. It was one of the finest pieces of land in that country and had one of the largest tracts of valuable pine anywhere In the country. Freestone built his cabin and duly made the filing when his good fortune became the envy of a couple of land sharks and they immediately set about it to beat him out of his interests in the claim. The story is that they went to Grand Rapids where another man named Freestone lives whose initials are the same as that of Jesse. They asked him about the land and succeeded in con vincing him that some cruiser had come along, found the land to be valuable out of the ordinary and had made a filing for him. Freestone at Grand Rapids was readily persuaded that this was the case. They then induced him to sign a relinquishment. With this they proceeded back to the Koochiching country and in a few days Mr. Freestone was surprised upon returning to his cabin to find his goods set out side and the padlock and staple' he had put on taken off and re* placed by another. He was quite ignorant of the transaction that had been had in the mean time and he was surprised a few days later to be placed under ar rest and taken to Grand Rapids for housebreaking. His attorney succeeded in having him re leased under habeas corpus pro ceedings. The treatment ac corded Freestone has very thoroughly aroused his friends and they propose to assist him in fighting the case to the limit and prosecuting the grafters who have gotten him in all the trouble. The contest has excited more interest than a political campaign and the finish was fully as lively. Miss McTagart's friends made a very active campaign in her behalf and thjs morning the friends of the other two candi dates saw that they had begun too late to fight desperately. They therefore combined their forces and threw all possible votes to Miss Villeman. It was too late however andMissMcTaggert won by a small majority over both competitors. The contest in this city was a most friendly one and demons trates that each candidate has a host of friends. The most spectacular part of the contest was the fight up the north line which finally resulted in a contest for supremacy be tween Blackduck and Tenstrike. The contest was an unequal one but Tenstrike made a most mag nificent fight and all but won out. Miss Mead's margin over Miss Cyr is but 230 votes. That Miss Cyr should make so gallant a run is the highest possible compli ment to the zeal of her friends, the loyalty of Tenstrike and the popularity of Miss Cyr.
