the Daily Pioneer PUBLISHED EVERY AFTERNOON. PIONEER PUBLISHING CO. By R. W. HITCHCOCK. Entered in the postofiice at BeinidJI, Minn., as second class matter. Official County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR 1903 DECEMBE 1903 Su. Mo. Tu. We. Th. 1 2 9 6 20 3 Tu 10 Daily Pioneer is not a year old yetj its news and editorial columns are more freely quoted than those of any other country daily in Minnesota. This is a very satisfactory state of affairs to 1h Pioneer, but it should be even more satisfactory to the business men of Bemidji and Beltrami county. That city and county should have a newspaper of such standing and influence is asset which cannot be estimated in figures. I THE opposition to Bob Dunn is so hard to put to it why not take up with Frank M. Eddy who seems to be about the only man in the state outside of Dunn who has any strength of his own. 4 DOWIE declares that he will return to earth Tritii Christ. Let us hope, so. But there are no immediate signs of rhemillenium. NiTvv Yo:tK spent six millions for Christmas gifts. Hope it didi'i vOaie us hard as did our six del' us. The Laily Pioneer want col umnc a eooJ result getters. Tr\ i:.biu, BITS I FROM TH E 6 Fr. Sa. 4 ro 7 8 13 14 21 II 18 15 22 29 12 19 26 16 17 23 30 27128 24 25 3l| HAMA, CANDIDATE. Marcus A. Hanna is a candi date for the republican nomina tion for president of the United States. He has not publically avowed the fact lie has, indeed, publically denied it. But he is a candidate just the same, and if there is anybody who does not know it, it is someone who has givon little thought to the situation. Hanna denies his candidacy be cause he is not ready to announce it and fears that he never will be ready to announce it. He noth ing doubts that he may have the nomination for the asking, for has he not the politicians, pretty nearly every man jack of them? But the people decide the elec tion and that is what makes Hanna pause. We will venture the assertion however that Hanna cannot be nominated. No matter how solidly he has the politicians he cannot secure the nomination. The people have of late years taken to dictating the nomination of their presidents. The innova tion has proven very satisfactory, the people like it and they mean to keep it up. The people of this country, irrespective of politics, demand the nomination and election of Roosevelt and when the repub lican national convention meets ne: summer in Chicago its members will dare do nothing 1 nom in ate Theodore-Roosevelt. NORTH?* COUNTR 5 While there's life there's hope for a railroad at Roseau. Twin Valley becomes a land grabber and plans an election to make it legal. A good deal of mud seems to have been stirred up in Clear water county. The Beltrami County Bugle is blowing to beat the band for in corporation up at Punkley. The Jasper Journal was a red hot number last week whereunto pink print paper helped it some. Bagley will surely be a north country town one of these days. Its ninth saloon has been sighted. If a little more ink were put on some of the print paper circu lating in this section the north country would have several more newspapers. The Northland Farmer plows its first furrow at Ashana, St. Louis county. Here's hoping it will get over the whole field, and reap a rich harvest in due sea son. Lack of nerve is a serious de fect in a politician says the Du luth News Tribune and the Black duck Times observes that in this respect Beltrami county politi cians are faultless. The Backus News and Pillager Post unblushingly perpetrates this upon "Dad Scribnes, our village marshal:" There is an old man we call "Dad" That bought a goat whose behavior is bad. One day the goat became inclined To eat red shirts off the line Then Dad to the goat did say: Your time has come, you must die this day. Ho took him to the railroad track And there he tied him on his back. The train it came, the whistle blew The goat lie knew his time was due, And, with an awful shriek of pain, Coughed up the shirts and flagged the train. F. O. E.
