THE CITY We mix paints toorder. Jones Mrs, B. Kultie, of Blackduck, is in the city today. Lou S. Smith, of Turtle River, is in the city today the guest of relatives. President Baumbach, of the Lumberman's bank, is at Crooks ton on a business trip. Hark ye to the peasant strain. People are often saved by taking Mark's Lung Balsam. Thomas Sweeney, of Posston, arrived in the city today, and is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Bishop. Mrs. Gable gave a progressive scinch party Saturday evening. Everybody reported a very pleas ant time. Wm. Fellows, who operates a sawmill at Tenstrike together with his family spent Sunday the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Young. Chas. Knopke who has been off duty for the past several days with a disabled arm resumed work at the Bemidji Meat Mark et today. Mrs. George McTaggart, wTho has been at the hospital for sev eral days had sufficiently re covered to return to her home yesterday. Miss May Chase, who has been employed at Berman's Empori um, has been called to her home at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, by the serious illness of a relative. Tom Davis, once a well known character about the city, but who has been at the poor farm for some time past, is quite serious ly ill and cannot survive much longer. A punching bag has been put in for the private recreation of the boys at C. H. Miles and it will be unsafe to "start anything" in that immediate vicinity after they have had a short season of practice. Quite a party of Bemidji young people attended a dance at Grlrit Valley last Saturday night and report a very enjoyable time. Mr. Harris is pro prietor of the Hotel Richards at Tenstrike. John Cobb, the obliging assist ant at Winter's Jewelry store, is spending the Christmas holidays with his parents, Editor and Mrs. Cobb, at Park Rapids. Mrs. C. R. Martin returned from her old home at Osakis Saturday evening, where she was called several weeks ago by the serious illness of her father. Mrs. Martin left him in good health. W- A- McDonald, who pur chased the Brink saloon is mak ing a number of improvements and expects to have one of the finest places in town when all are completed. U. S. Land Commissioner Wat son, who has been at Northome for some time past, announces that he will establish no new dates after Feb. 15, as he intends to remove to Ripple. C. M. Bacon is recovering very nicely from the operation which he recently underwent at St, Anthony's hospital and is ex pected to be able to be down town in a few days. A. L. Crawford has just re turned from a trip to the Roberts & Crawford cedar camps up the north line. T. Faust, the well known Grand Forks man, is in the city on business today. Frank Richards is in the city on his way to Nebish returning from a business trip to the Twin Cities. Rev. Higgins, the choir from the Presbyterian church and quite a party of young people visited the poor farm last Satur day evening and held services for the inmates, that was appreciat ed. The News office is being moved to its new location today. All the idle men and teams in the city haye been pressed into ser vice in transporting the heavy machinery and the operation is being personally superintended by Editor Martin. August Peterson, the woods man who was operated upon at St. Anthony's hospital some time ago by Drs. Henderson .arid Ward, after receiving serious in juries by being struck on the heap with a falling tree is able to situpand his entire recovery with no bad effects is anticipated. The man's condition was for a time regarded as very critical. Died of Pnuemonia. Yesterday at his home in the town of Grant Valley occured the death of F. R. Wright, who is quite well known in Bemidji. Mr. Wright was 73 years of age and the immediate cause of his death was an attack of pnuemonia He had resided in this vicinity for about four years and was highly respected by his friends and neighbors. The funeral occurs tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. Five More. Corporal Witte is meeting with very gratifying success in his recruiting efforts at this point. During the past three days Mr. Witte has been successful in securing five enlistments. One goes to infantry at Columbus, Ohio, another to the coast artil lery service at Seattle and the other three to cavalry at St. Louis. The men will be shipped the latter part of the present week. Parents Bereaved. The death of the three-months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jens Larson occurred at the family home yesterday and was due to pneumonia from which the little one had been suffering for sometime. A special agent of the Groat Northern Railway has for some time past been investing the water supply at several of the stations along the road in this vicinity. The company has tanks at several towns in this vicinity that soon must be abandoned for the reason that the water contains some quality that eats out the boilers of locomotives and renders then useless long before they should be. Water from all tanks is to be carefully analyzed in the futiiro'anil the road will make an effort to establish a new water I supply which will do away with the obstacles to which the pre sent supply gives rise. Too Many Cold Bottles. Ida Murray and Claude Woods salaamed in Judge Skinvik's court this afternoon to answer to a charge of having Christmased in a riotous manner at the giddy heights. Both were intoxicated yesterday and sang "Show me the way to go Borne" contrary to the statute in such case made and provided and against the peace and dignity of the^yillage of Bemidji. The court imposed a tine of $5 and costs and Claude and Ida went out to borrow the" money. Santas Whiskers Singed. Mr. Morrow who was perform ing the very necessary function Santa Claus at a Christmas tree given at the home of Mr. and Mrs Smith last Thursday evening met with quite a serious accident. In distributing the presents a part of the cotton batting used in his makeup caught tire and he sustained bad burns about the head and face. Remembered Firemen. O'Leary & Bowser have for several years remembered the boys of the fire denartment with a Christmas present and the pre sent year was no exception. The firm's check for $10 was turned over to Treasurer Goodman Saturday. Patent Medicine Manufacturers Agree on a Plan. New York. Dec-. 28.Soon after the beginning of the year some of the largest manufacturers of patent medi cines will, it is stated, put into effect In this eity a new plan to slop the cutting of prices on such articles by druggists and department stores. It is the intention to have a fixed price list below which the manufacturers will not allow their goods to lie sold at retail.
