The stone work for the new hotel foundation was commenced yester day. The autumn term of school begins one week from Monda}7, September 4th. Regular preaching services at the Presbyterian Church Sunday, morn ing and evening. W. V. Caldwell has the foundation for his new store building ready for the superstructure. Jos. Backus has his new fixtures in place and has one of the neatest sample rooms on the range. Supt. S. J. Roberts, of the Fay, is again able to be out after a week's confinement with illness at the Vir ginia Hospital. Milavetz Bros, new building nears completion, and the boys will occu py same about the 15th with an ele gant and complete stock. The brick work on the Roman corner block will be completed this week. Mr. and Mrs. S. A, Poole mourn the loss of their little son, nine months of age, who died yesterday morning from spinal menengitis. The new Axel Pakkala building »ears completion, and is a hand some structure. Mr. Pakkala will reopen for business the first of the month. Richard Baker, of The Hub, re ceived his elegant new fixtures last Friday and had a grand opening in his new place in the BjTne block last evening. The new double veneer block be ing erected b}^ Frank Trampush and H. G. Skramstad on their east Chest nut street property, will be ready for occupancy two weeks hence. K. K. Burle}^ moved into and open ed his new tonsorial parlors and bath rooms Saturday. He now has the finest appointed shop in St. Louis county, his outfit embodying all latest improvements. Dan McRae, a section man at Al len Junction, was drowned while bathing in the Partridge riv«r Sun da}' afternoon. The body was re covered the following day and taken to Two Harbors for interment. Geo. O'Callaghan, of Nor\vajT, Mich., will be in the cit}r tomorrow and will at once rebuild on his lot adjoining Tornquists liver}-. He may also decide to build on his oth er lot, adjoining the Calderwood block. The Virginia Jewelry Co. moved into their handsome new building Monday, and have a neat and com modious place. Mr. Bailie has add ed a large stock of standard and fancy goods, and again feels that he is ready for business. The foundation for the handsome new school building at the Fayal is complete and Mr. Wessinger, sup erintendent of construction, states th^t Contractor Denton has every thing in readiness to proceed with the erection of the superstructure at once. B. Levy, of The Enterprise Cloth ing and Shoe House, will this week move into his new location in the Scott building, opposite the Medical Block. Mr. Levy returned Saturday from the markets, where he bought a large new stock of seasonable goods. J. A. Woods, a contracting mason, died at the Chesser House in this city Monday afternoon, of inflam mation of the bowels. Deceased was 65 years of age, and leaves a wife and six children to mourn his loss. His home was at Mt. Carroll, 111., and the remains, accompanied by a son and daughter, Mrs. D. A. McKinney, of Biwabik, were taken to that place Tuesday for interment. Postmaster Bates has leased the corner room of the new Op'era House block and will shortly move the postoffice thereto. He has also bought handsome new fixtures to replace those destroyed by fire. The new location will give the office a spacious room and the new fixtures will fill a long felt want, making possible a much better and more satisfactory service than could be accorded in the "shack" quarters occupied since the fire. The Virginia Hardware Company will move into their commodious new block the coming week. M. Steinberg pushes work on his new building and expects jo occupy same about September 15th. Alfred Burke's new building is complete and his fine new fixtures are being placed, in readiness for the occupancy of the building to morrow. Ned K. Farrand, the insurance agent, is permanently located in the Virginia Jewelry Co. store, where he has one of the neatest and best appointed offices on the range. Mr. Farrand has the ratings for all. new buildings in the city, and is doing a splendid business. The ladies of the S. H. & K. F. of A. tendered a most enjoyable lawn social at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Peterson, corner Maple street and Wjroming avenue, Saturday af ternoon last. A large number were present and the receipts of the en tertainment were in accordance. At the Wednesday evening coun cil meeting Alderman Peter Ship ley, of the second ward, tendered his resignation, which was accept ed. This leaves but five members of the council, Aldermen Halverson and Michan having previously re signed on account of removing to Eveleth. Health Officer Avery is demon strating the fact that he means bus iness when he serves notices upon owners or occupants to clean their premises. Judge Nelson was called upon yesterday to emphasize tl:e reprimand of the Board of Health, and did his duty in a manner not to be forgotten by the defendants. Messrs. H. A. Sodergren and S. Oberg will erect another double brick, two stories, adjoining the Medical Block on the west, and to be of the same finish and material. This will make a red pressed brick block with 150 feet frontage. Con tractor Sampson has the job and the work of excavating for founda tions is now in progress. Civil Engineer Lamont made a verbal report to the council Wed nesday evening of the level between Chestnut street and a point down the outlet to the first rapids, show ing a fall of about one foot to the thousand. The report was accepted. This would necessitate the erection of a pumping station, and the coun cil is looking up probable costs of such plant as will be necessitated. Hibbing Sentinel: The last issue of Dowling's Eveleth Star contains the statement that Editor Atkinson "is now publishing the Ilibbing Sentinel, as well as the Police News, which accounts for the frothy eulo gy last week of Hannaford and his paper at Virginia." Just what Dowl ing expects to gain by printing this palpable falsehood is a mystery to the publishers of this paper, whose names have appeared at the head of this column for more than six years past. The "frothy eulogy" in question was written by the editor of this paper as a sincere tribute to the genuine worth of a brainy news paper man, whose caustic pen has often found a vulnerable spot in the 4-ply epidermis which only partially conceals the many foibles in the character of Paddy Dowling.
