Swenson Looks Over Lands With Idea of Establishing Brick Yard. P. N. Sewnson, secretary of the Tramway Brick Co., of Menomonie, W is., is in the city this week looking up a matter which he has had un der consideration for many years— the establishment of a brick yard at this point. Some fourteen years ago Mr. Swenson, who is a brother-in-law of A. Dahl of this city, was here and in company with others secured clay from a proven deposit of thirty feet in depth, which was thoroughly tested and found satisfactory in every particular, but for some other reasons the plan of establishing a yard at that time was abandoned. It is now the intention to pick up the idea and with that end iii view additional tests will be made and the land secured. In conjunction with Mr. Swenson will be others interested in the Tramway company, including W. A. Drowley, a brick-maker of forty years experience, and Henry Sprink, president of the Menomonie comp any. The establishment and success of such an enterprise would be a big thing to Virginia, our central location rendering the city the natural distributing point not only for the range but with our railroad connections giving us a field for such material throughout the Canadian northwest, where is to be found an exceptional market. Council Has Short Session. The Tuesday evening session of the city council was devoid of mat ters of great note, but little busi ness appearing to demand the at tention of the body. A petition from residents along the street asking for an extension of the water mains on Cedar street from Mesaba avenue to Railroad avenue was read and upon motion referred to the Virginia Light & Water Co. An ordinance providing for a chief engineer for the Virginia Fire Department and providing regula tions for the new paid department was presented and upon motion was given its first reading. A resolution providing for the payment of $50 to the Virginian for space occupied under contract in the Industrial Edition of that paper was passed by unanimous vote of all aldermen present. The city clerk was instructed to notify James Sullivan to vacate the old city hall building, the building being desired for other purposes. The council will probably meet at 7:30 next Tuesday evening and adjourn until the following night, because of the call for the Republi can City Convention to be held at the council chambers on Tuesday evening at 8:00 o'clock. Find Tin on Vermilion. A Tower correspondent to the DuluthEvening Herald is a uthority for the statement that Fred Hannon, an experienced mining engineer who has been doing an amount of exploratory work on the Vermilion for some months past, has un covered a big tin lead on the shores of Vermilion lake, the exact loca tion of which is as yet kept secret. It is stated that several assays made show the ore to be very rich. Whom Mr. Hannon represents is unknown, although he seemingly has ample financial backing in his enterprise. He is at present in Chicago, aud it is expected that up on his return active development of the find will be commenced. New Passenger Equipment Here. The handsome new train to be placed on the passenger run of the Duluth, Rainy Lake & Winnipeg between this city and Ranier, ar rived in the city the last of the week and will be put in commis sion on the regular run when the passenger service is extended to the border the latter part of the month. The train comprises three handsome passenger coaches and a baggage car, and is equal to any equipment on any range road or in the northern part of the state. Catchy Music. A delicious morsel in the comedy farce, "The Irish Pawnbrokers," is the introduction of a quainty melo dious Irish "crooning" song and lullaby, done by Tony Murphy. The music of this number is said to be extremely catchy and easy to re member, and so popular does it im mediately become that it is whistled and hummed by all the small boys, and by many of the big ones where ever the play is produced. At Fay Opera, Saturday, October 12. Wedded at Henderson. At the home of the bride's parents at Henderson, Minn,, on Wednesdaiy occurred the marriage of Miss Mathilda Schauer, a former teacher in the Virginia schools, to Dr. T. P. Baldwin, formerly connected with the Lenont Hospital in this city but how in charge of a hospital at Trinidad, Wash., where the young people will make their future home. Explore Near Iron Junction. John Chesser has this week com menced exploratory work on lands belonging to T. C. Young in section 15,57-18, near Iron Junction. This is the first work ever done in this section, and the outcome of the work will be awaited with interest by many. Mr. Chesser has one drill at work and will likely place another drill on the lands shortly. Larkin Shipping Stockpile* The Larkin, the local property of the New York State Steel Co., has this week commenced shipments from its stockpile, a trial order of 5,000 tons being the first shipment from the property. The mine has a stockpile of some 27,000 or 28,000 tons, and it is likely the entire lot will be cleaned up before the close of the season. Under the direction of Supt. Ken-, dall and Capt. Polglase, mining captain at the property, a new two compartment shaft has been sunk on the property the present season and a considerable amount of de velopment work done, proving the. ore body in a satisfactory manner. The Larkin has employed a good force in this work and more men are being added. Farewell Services M. E. Church. HORNING SERVICE. With the prospective moving of the town of Sparta the hustling citizens of the enterprising village are up and doing, planning great improvements for the new place,' Among these is a double store building of solid brick by Saari, Campbell & Kraker, a brick livery by McHale & Hogan, a First Na tional Bank by George A. Whitman. The new plat will also, it is said, be provided with sewer and water and"' will be replete with all modern im provements. Mine Valuations Stand. By a vote of 9 to 16 the state board of equalization on Wednesday de cided to let the mines assessment of $191,000,000, as returned by the state tax commission, stand. Those six voted for a ten per cent increase in valuations, while a proposition to reduce the valuations from the figure named to $150,000,000 found support of only two members of the board. Building Steel Bridge. A. Y. Bane & Co., who have had the contract for the construction of a steel bridge across the narrows, between Silver and Virginia lakes for several months past but who have been delayed because of their inability to get material, have a crew at work on the structure this week and will push same to com pletion as quickly as possible. Three Drills at Work. The Hanna interests now have three drills at work on the land known as the Virginia Sliver on which they recently secured an option. The existence of ore on the property is known beyond reason able doubt, and additional drills will be put on shortly to assist in proving the extent of the deposit. Masquerade Ball. At the last meeting of Virginia Grove No. 46, U. A. O. D., it was de cided to hold the first masque ball of the season on election night, No vember 5th.
