Terms. $2 Per Year, in Advance THE Brown-Gary fight, to have been pulled off before the Bartend er's Club at Superior on Tuesday night, was stopped by the police, notice being served during the af ternoon that the "go" would not be permitted. Come to Virginia, boys not that the police will know noth ing about it until afterward, but that innocent sport has never been barred from the range communi ties. THE bill providing for regular terms of district court at Hibbing and Virginia, with adjourned ses sions at Ely, passed the senate on Tuesday and received the signature of the governor the following day. The first regular term at Hibbing will be convened on the first Tues day in Tune, while the first regular term in this city under the new law will be convened on the third Tues day in August. THE thirty-seventh session of the Minnesota legislature has passed into history, and so far as any par ticular good it accomplished for the people of Minnesota it might as well have passed before convening. The most distinguishing mark of the session was the acrimonious feelings between members at the close, Resulting in a rough house in which not only the lie was passed but in which brute force1 became a factor. THAT little Mexican disturbance continues to disturb, with the re sult that the people of the United States continue to pay the freight for the protection of the interests of the interests in our southern repub lic. By the time it is over there will not be as many in the list of dead or dying as there would be in a plain street car riot in an Ameri can city, but the seance will have cost the people of the United States enough millions to have erected a suitable federal building in every city of ten thousand souls in the country. Ishpeming Man Dies at Ghishoim. Herman Jaedecke, of Ishpeming, manufacturer of the famous Planta tion cigar and well-known at all range points which he has visited regularly for years in the interest of his factory, died on Tuesday at the Hotel Neallv, Chisholm, of pneumonia, after an illness of sev eral days The deceased was 5.1 years of age, and had many friends in this city, a large number of Virginians' being former residents of the Michigan city. The body was shipped to Ish peming on Wednesday. Mrs. Jaedecke, who had been call ed to the range by the illness of her husband, was with him at the last. Look Over Miller Trunk Road. Chairman Mclnnis and John Tis cher, of the board of county com missioners, were in the city Wed nesday looking over the new court building and being met here later in the day by other members of the board, the board making a tour of inspection of the Miller Trunk road as guests of the Duluth Motor Com pany yesterday. A beautiful day for the drive, and while the roads are riot of the best as yet this par ticular road was doubtless found in far better shape than at the time of its formal acceptance by tin- county some years ago. Entertain at Dinner in Honor of Teachers. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Palmer enter tained at dinner last night in honor of the Misses Adele Kace, Lolla Race and Marguerite Warner, a trio of Virginia teachers visiting in the city. Covers were laid for seven. The attractiveness of the dining room was charmingly enhanced by pink and white ribbons and flowers. The young ladies who have been enjoying their Kaster vacation in Duluth and Minneapolis returned to Virginia last night.—News Trib une. New Hall in Prospect. It is stated the Virginia contin gent of the Socialist party, now numbering: some six to eight hun dred members, considers the erec tion of a handsome edifice at a co9t of $00,000. The plan as outlined is for the sale of stock in the building at $100 per share, the building: to be planned as an opera house. A loca tion for the proposed building has not as yet been selected, but such a structure if well located should prove a paying investment. Scand. Ev. Mission Church. The new mill of the Virginia & Rainy Lake Company sustained a break-down affecting the entire plant on Monday, the bigfpulley on the main line shaft being put out of commission. The making of a new pulley and the remodeling of the pattern give the employes of the plant an enforced holiday for an other week. Christian Science Society. Johnson, Mr. President—2. Reading minutes of previous meeting. Moved and supported that the minutes be approved as read. Curried. A communication from the city council at Eveletli requested the council of Vir ginia, oras many of the council as could, to meet with the councils of the range com munities at. the city hall at Evelethon Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, April 20, 1911, for the purpose of formulating some uniformity of franchise for street railway on the range. Moved and supported that the city clerk be instructed to answer the communica tion and state that as many of the officials of the council as possible would attend the meeting at Eveleth on the date set. Carried. A petition for construction of sidewalks at various locations in the Xortli Side Ad dition to the citv were presented and refer red to the committee on streets, alleys and sewers. The clerk of the municipal court reported fines collected in that court for the week ending April Sth, 1011, the fines amounting to $177.50 and the costs amounting to $18.25, making a total of $225.J5. Moved and supported that the report be accepted and ordered filed. Carried. A communication from the iK»lice and fire commission in the matter of placing incandescent lamps in the alleys north and south of Chestnut street, also for the turning over to the commission the old city hall building for fire department pur poses. was read to the council. The first proposition was referred to the committee on light and water, and the sec ond proposition was referred to the com mittee on streets, alleys and sewers. .The city attorney, to whom was referred the matter of the injury to Mrs. Helmi Au tio and for which was demanded damage from the city in the sum of $3000.00, report ed in writing a recommendation to the council that no claim in this matter be al lowed. Moved and supported that the report be accepted and ordered filed. Carried. Elmer Matheson made application to the council for a permit for the removal of his building on lots 12 and 13, block 24, to lot 22 in block 24, just across the alley, and for the erection of a two story brick building on lots 12 and 13, block 24, and for the use of a necessary Dortion of Chestnut street for the storing of necessary material during the construction of the building and forthe fencing in of a portion of the street, nam ing Fred L. Johnson and M. L. Matheson as sureties. Moved and supported that the permit be granted, the bond accepted and after ap proval by the mayor ordered filed. Carried. Chas. Berglund made application to the council to be appointed as assistant pound master, and the application was referred to the committee on streets, alleys and sewers. Rainon 6c Esko applied for transfer of their liquor license at 414 Chestnut street to Frank Heikkala, and presented a surety bond for the unexpired term. Moved and supported that the transfer be allowed, the bond accepted and filed af ter approval of the mayor, and that a reso lution be drawn covering the transaction. Carried. Hansen & Johnson made application lor the renewal of their liquor license at 416 Chestnut street, and presented a surety bond in the sum of $2000.00. Moved and supported that the license be granted, the bond accepted and after ap proval by the mayor ordered filed and that a resolution be dirawn covering the trans action. Carried. The Virginia Study Club presented a com" munication to t.he council asking each member of the council to give the smoke ordinance careful attention arid to use their best influence in bringing the ordin ance to a prompt and successful vote. Moved and supported that the commun ication be accepted and ordered filed. Carried. The city engineer suggested that steps be taken to have water main extensions on the streets and avenues proposed to be paved this year, so that the 'ground would have ample time to settle back into place. Carried. Property owners on the west side of Wy oming avenue, between Walnut street and the northwest corner of Pine street, peti tioned the council to build or cause to be built sidewalk and street crossings along this thoroughfare, and the petition was re ferred to the committee on streets, alleys and sewers. Moved and supported that the ordinance declaring the emission of dense smoke within the city of Virginia a public nuis ance and prohibiting the same be given its lirst reading. Carried. The ordinance was read by the clerk. The ordinance committee reported that it would not recommend the passage of the amendment to Ordinance No. 93, entitled "An ordinance to establish the office of electric inspector, to regulate and define the duties of said office and to establish rules and regulations concerning the wiring and electric appliances." The committee on streets, alleys and sewers reported that in the matter of the tearing down of the walls of the Engle building and the danger of the front of the building falling over the street, thev desir ed to have power to act in the matter so that steps could be taken when necessary to protect the public from any danger. Moved and supported that the committee on streets, alleys and sewers be given absolute power to act in the matter under question and have the matter brought to the attention of the chief of the fire depart ment. Carried. The committee on light and water, to whom was referred the matter of J. A. Kerttu reported in writing in the matter of the water charge by the Virginia Electric Power &. Water Company to J. A. Kerttu and recommended that Mr. Kerttu settle in full all bills not paid to the light and water company. Moved and supported that the report be accepted and ordered filed. Carried. The matter of collecting back rent from the county for the use of the district court and county offices in the city hall building was referred to the finance committee for adjustment. The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education was called to order at 8:30 o'clock p. in. by the chairman. Roll call: Present, Joseph Roskilly, T. H. Fleming, Helen E. Coffman. R. J. McGhee. Lafayette Bliss, Guy H. Moore, N. A. Holmer. Absent, none. The minutes of the regular meeting of February 4,1911, were read and approved. Guy II. Moore, chairman of the building committee, reported progress on the work of furnishing fire protection at the John son, Central and Primary buildings. The committee recommended connecting the two boilers at the Primary building accord ing to specifications furnished by L. A. Larson, civil engineer. Two Kir liter-Bender fire escapes were recommended for the Roosevelt, an asbestos curtain for the stage, and a metal stairway leading from the rear of the stage to the second floor. Moved by R. J. McGhee that the report of the committee be accepted and a summary of the same spread on the minute B. Seconded and carried. Moved by R. J. McGhee, seconded by J. H. Fleming, that the chairman and clerk of the Independent School District of Vir ginia be instructed to enter into a contract with the Dow Wire and Iron Works, for two Kirker-Bender spiral fire escapes, accord ing to specifications furnished in the con tract the said spiral escapes to be erected on the west side of the Roosevelt building.
