JOHN FARRINTON, President. Official: . R. L. Gorman, Clerk Board of Public Works. The Author of "Torirh's Tmvc." Mr Hovels wrote the following letter to the i Boston Transcript on Tuesday: In speaking i; yesterday of "Yorrick's Love," the beautiful' tragedy in which Mr. Barrett has made his gratifying success in London, you attribute the play tome in terms too explicit to be passed with out notice. The play was written by a contemporary Spaniard, well known.in Mad rid, but known to me only by his pseudo nym, Joaquin Estebunez. I would be very proud and glad to have written it, for it seems to me almost the greatest tragedy which we have seen since Shakespeare, with a unique force of Southern passion aud North ern conscience in the presentation of a pa thetic theme, conceived in the loftiest and purest mood; but this great honor is not mine. . I translated the Spamsbnas vigorous ly as. I knew how, and I wrote a few brief scenes in the versions for Mr. Barrett, turn ing the stronger passages into blank verse, and "adapting" it a little here and there; of course, I tried to give the diction and Eliza bethian coloring. In Spanish the play was called "Un Drama Nuevo," and it was called "A New Play" till Mr. Barrett had the happy inspiration of naming it Yorick's Love." W.D . Ho wells. !;!.':"■> '.. ''■• -: •.. .'. The Vote liy Sections. The following table shows the number of votes to which several sections of the coun try are respectively entitled in the approach ing Repbblican National Convention: New England States 70 ■ Middle States .... 156 Southern States 300 Western States. 270 Territories 13 Total *. 820 The notable fact here revealed is that the section which cannot be depended upon to cast a single vote in the Electoral college for the Repblican candidates wields considera ply more than one-third the entire, strength of the convention. Why has not the injus tice of this inequality been remedied long ago? There, are several reasons for it, but the principal *ie is that the Republican par •ty in the Southern states is absolutely con trolled by the officeholders, and no Republican administration has been willing to relinquish so powerful a means of influencing the ac tion of the national conventions of its party. . Vine Tree Jlackulidnng. Since Mr. Blame shook the Maine dust off his feet and became a citizen of Washington, his former constituents have shown a dispo sition to worship strange gods. The most "brilliant champion of ■ protection" will be shocked to hear that the herc'sy of tariff re form is rapidly supplanting the faith which he taught them. It is theshoemanufactures' turn to j complain now, and the burden of ;their plaint is that the duties levied upon the 'raw materials used in the manufacture of shoes "are so unreasonable that we cannot "manufacture for an export trade; hence the "factories are idle nearly six months in the "year, thus making the condition of the la "borer one. of constant and often extreme "anxiety, while the capital employed is idle "nearly half the time." If Mr. Blame were confronted by these recalcitrants, would he have > the assurance to tell them that they dont know what they are talking about, and thtat 'he high tariff is a national blessing. The Bite of a Mad Jiog Xot Always Fatal. •■■ .'"' St. Jame's Gazette. The bite of a mad dog, it would appear, is not as fatal as is generally supposed. A re port upon the subject for the Department of the Seine, Issued by the Paris Prefecture of Police for the last three years, shows that of 156 persons bitten by rabid dogs in 1881 eigh ty died; in 1882 nine out of sixty-seven bit ten died; and in 1883 five only out of for ty-five. ; With regard to the treatment of the bite of a rabid animal, the experience of the French doctors shows that the only remedy which can be depended upon to destroy the virus is the prompt application to the wound of cautery by red-hot iron. Twenty persons died of hydrophobia in the Department of the Seine -in 1881, nine in 1882, and four in 1883, as far as the official returns shows. The decreasing number of deaths from this cause is attributed to the stricter measures adopted with regard to ownerless dogs. During the three . years mentioned 11,564 stray dogs were captured in Paris and the department, and destroyed. . ' • Extracted ll<yney, A very large part of the honey crop is now taken in the form of extracted honey. , Comb honey is good and beautiful, but it , has the disadvantage of the wax, which is in digestible and which ' nobody cares to eat. In the extracted . honey we have no wax; it is honey in its purest form. Many people associate extracted honey with strained honey; they suppose that all honey out of the comb is strained honey, but this is great in justice sto extracted . honey. In getting strained honey all the combs from a ' hive, combs containing capped-brood, and grow ing larvie and pollen and honey, are mixed up together . and then the liquid squeezed out. |: In this way there is • obtained some honey, but there is also . obtained the juice of the growing larvae of the young • bees and : the pollen, so that ■ the honey has a rank flavor, a dark color, and associations by no means appetizing. ' But extracted : honey is as different from this strained honey as it is possible to be. In getting extracted honey we get no pollen, no juices of bees or larvae. We get simply the pure honey without any admixture whatever. He who on a cold win ter morning has never had pure, candied, white clover honey to spread on his hot cakes has lived in vain ! Life has lacked for him one of its chiefest charms! Colorado Far* mer. Odd Stories from Everywhere. Thus spoke a fair girl, about whose sweet young face there clustered a bang like a solid stone wall, around a flower garden, and ia whose vqice were mingled the soft notes of the flute and the silvery notes of a dinner bell half an hour late. The person addressed was a cold, hard man, with iron-gray hair and corkscrew whiskers and with that stern look in his eye which prompts a man to go elsewhere to borrow a dollar. He was sitting' in his ollice reading the morning paper. "Well, girl, what is it?" he replied, look ing at the headlines of the Chicago grain market dispatches. Local News Gathered by an lowa Editor, Bayard News. Our daughter Laila Bert, is visiting her aunt, Mrs. J. R. Brush, in the south part of Highland, this week. Our wife acknowledges calls from Ladies Leach, Ocheltree, Cornish, Vader, Rutledge, Kuapp, Blakeslee, Arrowsmith, and others. From a letter we learn that our mother, at Stewart, lowa, has been quite sick, which we very much regret. We hope to hear of her recovery soon. Not long since our daughter, in company with another girl, her schoolmate, was read ing in her language book and defining parts of speech. Among the rest they struck onto the word "noun," when our little boy, 8 years old, said: "Dude is a noun, common, because it is the name of a thing." Leaving home this morning for the office, we kissed our little four-year-old goodbye, saying to him: "Be a good boy, to-day." He somewhat surprised us by saying: "I will. Be a good man, papa." Sure enough, wa thought. We need the exhortation more than he. On the Xe.vt Jiloch. Detroit Free Press.
