On Sunday night seven inches of snow Ml
here, and on Monday a couple of inches
more. This gives the cord wood men a
chance to get in their work. -, '
Oats are selling: in this village at twenty
cents a bushel and corn at twenty-fire cents.
A child of Frauk Fillmore'Bdicdon Sun
day aud the funeral took place here on
Monday.
In lieu of something better, Monticello
bas organized a historical society and a chess
club.
The Congregational church society, which
has been wituout a resident minister for some
time, lias recently mgsged a preacher to fill
Its :ulpit.
The annual villaee election occurs next
Tuesday. Th- great question at these annual
elections heretofore has been whether license
to sell liquors shall be granted or ao*. The
temperance wave is at present running; pretty
bleb, aud it is probable that the antHicense
party will carry tbe day.
Mr. C. Jone3' house caught fire on the
ol^bt of the 20th and came near being
burned down, By great efforts it was saved,
but in a damaged condition.
The liveliest place, in town at present is the
skating rink, which is thronged with de
lighted skaters every evening.
The Mouticello high school will commence
on Monday, the nth, after giving its 200
pupils a vacation over Christmas and New
Year's.
At the present writing an Incipient "bliz
zard" is in progress, and the roads and
streets are being drifted full of "the beauti
ful, beautiful enow."
NEWPORT.

Newport, Dec. 29, 1834.— Thermometers
In this vicinity are again capable of register
ing the temperature.
Prof. Buritt is the name of the St. Paul
gentleman who has a class in v>cal music
here, instead of "Burt."
A. A. Witherspoon. who, for nearly nine
fears, has been a resident the Black Hill-;.
Dak., is here on a visit to his sister*. The
excitements of a mining country have made
Minnesota too slow for him, and he will re
turn to the hills about January 15.
A union Christmas tree was planted in the
Baptist church, and on Christmas ere the
members of the Baptist and M. E. Sunday
schools partook of the fruit, and a general
good time was had.
Mr. Froraer, of Hurley, Dak., arrived in
town on Saturday, aud is looking after prop
erly in which he claims to be interested.
Probably a second trip will be necessary to
secure a legal attachment, and the services
of an officer will be required.
On Monday next L. B. Maxon and ; L. C.
Everett expect to start for California by the
Southern Pacific route, and will take in the
New Orleans exposition on their Way.
The A. O. C. W. society met at their hall
on Saturday evening and elected ollicers for
the ensuing year. The society Is in a fairly
prosperous condition.
Mrs. Joseph Irish, an old and esteemed
resident of this place, and over seventy years
of age, died on Tuesday, the 2:? d inst., of
asthma, from which she has boon a sufferer
for many years. „ The funeral services were
held ou Christmas day. Mr. Irish, at the
time of his wife's death, was very iiek with
pneumonia, but is now considered out of
danger. The community extend kindly
Sympathy in his sad affliction.
Suicide of a Priest.
St. Loins, Dec. 3«.— The inquest to-day on
the body of Fatuer Rupplin, who took strych
nine in a saloon Sunday, terminated in a
Verdict of suicide. The deceased left letters
and certificates saying his name wns Rev.
Ferdinand- Baron Yon Rupplin, Catholic
priest. One of the letters read: "I com
mitted suicide on account of poverty and in ■
curable sickness. I had no shelter, no bread,
no home, no friends.and may God help me."
Another letter in the deceased's bandwritine
states that he was born at Fravrenfeldt, Can
lon Thurgan, Switzerland, March 7, 1841,
and that be was the son of Baron Joseph Yon
Rupplin, and that he was ordained a Catholic
priest at Buffalo, X. V., December 17, IS7O
by Bishop Stephen Vincent Ryan. The body
Will be buried from the morgue.

Youxgstowx, 0., Dec. Seven loco
motive engineers on the Ashtabula A Pitts
burg and Brie A: Pittsburg railroads
were discharged for an alleged offeuse
of securing more paj than they were
entitled to. It .is stated they connived
with ' the time . clerk at Erie who
made up the time and that $8,000 has thus
been overdrawn. The clerk resigned a short
time since and his successor discovered the
errors. The officials and men refuse to talk.
The engineers discharged have been em
ployed by the companies for several years.
Steamer Run Down.
Norfolk, V*., Dec. 30.— The steamer
John Rotner, running in connection with
the Chesapeak & Ohio railroad, while leaving
here this morning for Newport came In col
lision with .1 mud scow about a mile below
the city and so badly damaged there was
barely time to beach her on the Atlantic
Uity flats, where she now lies in liftmen feet
of water. She had forty passengers, but
there was no injury to ' passengers' or bag
gage. A dense fog prevailed.
Another Raid on Oklahoma.
Kansas City, Mo., Dec. 30.— 1n pursuance
of instructions from the war department,
Brig. Gen. Augur, of the department of the
Missouri, has ordered Col. Hatch, of the
Ninth cavalry, to proceed to Camp Russell,
on the Cimarron river, Indian territory, with
six troops of cavalry ud one company of in
fantry and remove unauthorized persons from
Oklahoma and other poiuts in the Indian
territory. Col. Hatch is now at Fort Leaven
worth, making preparations for the expedi
tion.
