Pii-bbe, Dak., May 7.— Trouble has commenced in earnest on' the Winnebago reservation, the Indians claiming to act under instructions from Agent Gassman, •md are destroying the property of the set tlers wherever they can. The latter ore preparbig organized resistance, and there will be some good Indians before long. As soon as the first shot is fired trouble will commence, and Agent Cabman had better call on the government or cease edging the Indians on^for there is a strong feeling against him for turning the savages loose. A meeting of the executive committee of the settlers has been called. Citizens in sympathy with the settlers are arming them selves to assist in driving the Indians from the lands. A "nittnell Outrage. It is not believed it will do any great amount of damage, as vegetation was not generally far enough advanced. Some early potatoes and other vegetables were cut off in their early youth, but grain, it is thought, will not suffer damage. The storm, however, will interrupt - the work of farmers nearly a week and so put them back. TTvvT T. .. ,? .... Will Have to Sow Again. Brown's Valley, May 7.— Quite a number of our farmers who had to buy their seed wheat had the misfortune of be ing compelled to seed their land a second time, for the seed they bought from the ele vator did not grow.' Pratt, the new postmaster at Ipswich, that his appointment is due to the personal friendship of the sister of the president. She asked to be allowed to select one postmaster in Dakota, and named her early friend and admirer, John Pratt. Two old and successful Illinois farmers have full-faith that.Dakota is a good land for corn and stock and -will put in 100 acres of corn 7 in Grant county this year which borders on the North. Very strong pressure will be brought to bear to secure the rescinding of this order. It is designed to prevent fraudulent proof, but will work much injury to the country. A dudish young man direct from London, not familiar with frontier bull-whacking, lately took a claim in Griggs county, and the local paper, the Courier, quotes him in this way: He started out with his load of lumber, dressed in corduroys, a helmet hat and eight bottles of.'alf and 'alf; and this was the way he talked to his cattle: "'0 'aw— golang, Duke! Beg your pawdon! Hi mean, gee— gee! Gee!! you balarsted, beastly, Hamerican haniinal!" The committee appointed by the presby tery of that section to locate a college of the denomination for Central Dakota have opened the bids and accepted that of Gro ton. The place is to donate forty acres of desirable land, with the church. building formerly used by the Congregational society valued at $1,500. It is a convenient loca tion and generally acceptable. The college is to be opened as soon as possible. ' jy y-. ■ Young people who think these is a for tune in teaching country schools in Dakota have not had much experience. The schools are generally small in summer and in most of the northern, counties the usual pay is from $30 to $35, about $20 of which is often required for board. . Some counties pay more liberal figures but the reports of superintendents show tliese as < the most frequent. y7.j : . ',? yyy | Quite a number of parties have aban doned their claims and left the reservations since the proclamation of the president. The great majority of them will no doubt remain and fight the matter out, but others don't care to run the risk of losing their time and money put in improvements. There is, however, very strong expectation that the report of Attorney General Rice will induce the president to let the matter rest until congress can act. Much sympathy is felt for Michael Cur ran, a member of the post of G. A. R. at Kimball, who has been living on a claim in Buffalo county with his family, He became demented just before he had intended to prove up, and was taken to the asylum at Yankton. The singular statement is made that there was no physician practicing in the county, and it was necessary to send to another county for one. This indicates a healthy climate. ??????; '■ 'Vj vyy7 J. W. Smith and H. A. Hole, representa tives of some of the largest loan companies from over the water, after viewing the Red river valley, visited the lower James and Sioux valleys. In these they expressed surprise to find fine timothy meadows, and gathered nice samples of corn and potatoes. They thought the ease with which the lat ter are produced and their superior quality would eventually lead to their exportation. In Spink county they took copious notes to present to the money loaners of the old regions.- --'y'yt •' *7y.?\J-7, > ?' -yT The case reported in Hanson county some time since in which the preacher was charged by the doctor with having forced hhn to sign two $100 notes in view of a pis tol, turned out pretty much of a farce.
