AMONG THE HOESES. ■ The Minnesota Circuit to Commence This Week— Trotting at Mankato, Still water and Hamline. '.' Some Suggestions as to What Horsemen Should Do to Raise the Best and Pastest Trotters. . . , . Mr. Kittson Loses a Valuable Filly- Ben Woodmansee at Anoka-Mar ratt's Horses at Freeport. An Eastern Opinion of Our Track, Our Kaces and Commodore Kittson's Stables. The Minnesota Circuit. The racing event of the most interest to Minnesota people is that of the trotting and pacing circuit that opens on Tuesday next lat Mankato. The racing at that city will continue three days,- the 15th, 16th and 17th of June. For these raoes the entries closed on Saturday evening last. Still water follows on the 22d, 23d and 24th, and the entries close at 11 p. m. Tuesday, June 15. The events at Stillwater will be: First day, 3:00 trot, $100; .2:25 trot. S6OO, and a special race. Second day, 2:2S trot, • $500 ; 2:25 pacing, $500 : 2:20 trot, $SOO. Third day, 2:15 class pacing, $400; 2:43 trot, $400; free-for-all pacing, SSOO. The St.- Paul and Minneapolis meeting at the state fair ground will take place "July 1, 2, 3 and 5, when $10,000 will be hung up, to be contested for as follows, • First aay, -3:00 trot, §500 : 2:30 trot, $600; free-for-all pace, $1,500. Second day, 2:25 trot. $800; 2:45 pace, $500; 2:20 trot, §1,500. Third day, 2:42 trot, $500; 2:28 pace, SSOO: '2:30 trot, $600. Fourth day, 2:2" trot, SSOO; 2:25 pace, SSOO; free-for-all trot. $1,500. All these purses will be divided, 50 per cent, to lirst, 25 per cent, to second, 15 per cent, to third and 10 per cent, to fourth. Trotting and pacing mile heats, three in five to harness, the rules of the National Trotting association, four to enter and three :to start, any horse distancing the field or any part thereof will be entitled to first • money only. If, owing to bad weather or other "unavoidable: cause, the club is unable to start one or more of its races at or before 3 o'clock p. in. of the last day of its meet ing, such races may or may not. at the op tion of the judges, be declared off. If de clared off the entrance money will be 'refunded. The horses will be called each day at 1:20 p, m. and started at 2 p. in., promptly. The records made at Freeport, (111., are no bar to this circuit. There are indications that the entrances will be large, ■ and that some noted horses will be in at tendance. All interested should bear in mind that the entries for Stillwater and % ; St. Paul and Minneapolis races close at 11 <p. m.. to-morrow,- June 15. This Mirme ' • sota circuit is a new creation for the bene . lit of Northwestern horsemen, and it re • quires solid encouragement if it is to be a 'i fixed annual event. If this is not kept up • Minnesota horsemen will be losers, not be- cause they will part with their money, but x because they will be deprived of the oppor . .-,. tunity of competing with each other for which is a great factor in V breeding, The animals must demonstrate ,- on the track what they can do, and show which can get under. the wire first. That, >it least, is the only conclusive test. The ' rJiorsemen of this state, some of them at any rate, assert that the climate of Miune • sota, and the grasses and water are such as will enable breeders of the trotting horse to produce horses that are as fast and as strong as those of any state in the union, not excepting Kentucky and California. It is to demonstrate the tmth of these asser tions that the breeders of Minnesota are now engaged in breeding the trotter. To . succeed the horses must be BROUGHT TO THE POST and started, and that is just what this cir cuit was formed for, to give breeders an opportunity to test the speed of their stock. All breeders know what Mr. Finkle of • Moorhead has done for the state of Minne sota. He has always declared that we can breed as fast horses here as can be bred anywhere, and he proved his honesty and confidence in that opinion by trying the experiment. The result actually startled people, and caused them to open their eyes in wonder. When Lord Nelson passed under the wire at Chicago, in his three year-old form, in 2:26 K. it is was a revela tion. It was clear to all who saw the heat that the time in which it was trotted was not the measure of the speed of the great three-year-old, and all began to reconsider their opinion about the Minnesota climate. The breeders of this state should also take home to their minds another fact in this connection. Mr. J. I. Case is a very able and shrewd business man. He has owned, and now owns, some of the fastest and best bred horses in America. During the last month or two he has seen fit to come to Minnesota and buy six or eight head of horses of Mr. Finkle. All these facts have a bearing upon the horse-breeding problem in this state that every breeder should ap preciate and measure exactly. They sug gest first, that those who go into the busi ness of breeding should not touch any stock that is- not the - best in regard to . breeding; second, the young stock should be judiciously taught to trot from its earli est days to the day of the trial, overdoing nothing either in feeding or exercise; and , third, that it should be brought to the post v and driven to win. If this is done there are those who believe, and can give good ' ; reasons for their belief, that Minnesota can ' not be surpassed by any state in the union .as a state in which to breed the trotter. They believe that our atmosphere, as cold as it is in winter, will put sounder lungs and vital organs generally into horses than will the climate of Kentucky or California, • and just as much speed. Such an oppor tunity as is now offered for the trotter and pacer at Mankato, Stillwater and Minneap olis and St. Paul ought to draw out a very ' large number of entries. SEEN FROM ABROAD. ; An Eastern Correspondent on . the New State Fair Grounds. A gentleman from the East, writing to the Spirit of the Times iv regard to our cir ■ cuit. fair grounds, horses and climate, has the following to say, after discribing the ; organization of the circuit and mentioning the officers: The state fair grounds have been selected as the scene of the coming contest, and it cannot be out of place to say a few words about this unusually fine park. The grounds cover an area of two hundred acres, the land being most picturesquely located and diversi fied with knolls and vales. This splendid property was presented to the State Agricul tural society by Ramsey county, and is situa ted exactly midway between the union depots of St. Paul and Minneapolis.and can bo reached in fifteen minutes by railway from each city, railroads, of J which there are two running Into the grounds, have tho most perfect ar rangements possible for handling the travel. The drives from the cities are very pleasant, through delightful suburbs. Fine buildings of great size and architectural beauty have been erected, and the process of embellishing the handsome property is proceeding rapidly. It will be but a few years before the grounds rival in beauty and completeness any in the world. On the 200 acres there was but one plateau, and that appeared to have been nat urally designed for a race track— at least, that was the impression of Mr. C. A. De Graff, the vice-president of the society last year, and he proceeded to build a track com mensurate with the importance and magni tude of tho entire undertaking. THE TRACK. It Is unnecessary to say that whatever Mr. De Graff, that prince of breeders and elegant gentleman, undertakes he does thoroughly and in the work to which he was delegated by his brother officers he gave his personal at tention, con ainore, producing a speeding course which is acknowledged to be one of the best, safest and fastest in the whole coun try. It is a regulation mile, differing, how ever, from many in that it has but two turns and two stretches. The turns are well thrown up. so that a horse can move around them with the same ease and steadiness as a'.oug the stretches. Going away from the wire there is a slight rise, always a ben ell': to a horse after frequent scoring, while no h the stretches have a slight decline. The soil of which the track is built is the best cc agna tion possible to produce the regulailc/ and solidity combined with the elasticity cs-ental to .: horses; in I' a high- flight of speed. The people here are very desirous of havingEast crn horsemen see and tcs- this track. 1 At Midway, Commodore Kittson's plac% • al oat a mile away Hie \y.< odmanses are diily .ixo:ci£injr Jo! n3t'n\M nnie R, Fanny Witu ertpoon,.: PririvO , "»*i : chur— -JS." : c. Long, one of the directors of the Twin Cities' club, is a subscriber to the Hartford purses, so your down Easters should return theacom pliment. • The prospect of a gand meeting here the Ist of July is very flattering, and I think there will be more genuine fun and faster time than was ever before soon so far Northwest. I.oc:il Horse Notes. G. W. Langevin has purchased from Mr. George A. Nash a bay gelding which is be lieved to have a good deal of speed. Ho will be placed in the hands of Mr. C. Q. Weeks, at the state fair grounds, with a view of giving him an opportunity to show whether or not he has anything in him vorth cultivating. He has trotted on the road at a pace that indi cates that he can now go close to 2:30. His breeding Is such as to warrant his owner in expecting something from him. Ho was bred by A. Post of Faribault. His sire is Volunteer Chiof, 1599, by Goldsmith's Volun teer, 55. • His dam was by a son of Black burn's Whip. There is no knowing but Mr. Laugevin has drawn a prize In this gelding. Mr. Bon Woodmansee, who has been in California for nearly a year, has returned, aud located himself and family at Anoka, where ho has purchased a lot and will build a residence. It is quite probable that he will hereafter reside there. Mr. Woodnninsee has been the superintendent for. Commodore Kittson at Midway since the stables' were established there. His health failed until it became a serious matter with him, and he ac cordingly went to California. Ho is a very pleasant gentleman, and has the respect and esteem of all that ever had relations with him. The citizens of Devil's Lake, Dak., will hold a stock show and three days', races July 1, 2 and 3, at which $3,000 in premiums will bo awarded. On the first day, July 1, the pro gram will be: Pacing, free-for-all, purse $85; running, half-mile heats, $100, and a three minuto trotting, $125. Second day, running, mile heats, $250: trotting, 2:50 class, $250, and a mule race, best two in three, half-mile heats, $50. Third day, free-for-all trotting, $375; pony race, purse $150. The purses will be divided into three parts. Mr. T. B. Marratt sent his stable to Free port, where he entered his horses in the races. Gen. Bibley was sick, and ho endeavored to draw him, but was not allowed to do so. He was distanced.:. His mare, Capitola,. won her race like a little lady in three straight heats, the fastest being in 2:26. On the Bth inst., Daisy Tramp, belonging to W. L. McGrath, dropped a handsome bay filly with a star, right hind foot white, by Theseus. There is something rather peculiar about this horse. He is a gray, and always gets bay colts, -nd none fail to have a star in the forehead. Commodore Kittson recently lost at Erden helm the bay colt foaled April 1, by imp.
