Lamentable or not, it la a fact that if the sporting instinct is a part of a man's make-up he can't suppress it. An instance of how the uncontrollable inclination to bet surgres to the surface at queer times and places and under extraor- dlnary circumstanecs occurred on a Como-Harriet car, westward bound. The two open cars were fairly crowded when the train stopped at Iglehart street for two well-dressed young women to get aboard. They wore chatting with animation as the car bowled along and did not notice that a handsome collie dog had at tempted to climb into the' car after them. Suddenly one of tho women turned to her companion and said excitedly: "Why there's Shep following the car." "Go home Shep," commanded the other sternly to the eager-faced canine. But the command was unheeded and ".Shep's" eyes only gleamed the bright er at the sound of his mistress's voice. The handsome brute kept even with the seat in which the two women THE ST. PAUL GUOBE sat and at every stop it placed its forepaws on the floor of the car and begged as plainly as though it could speak to be taken aboard. Only stern orders to "Go straight home" greeted each appeal, however, and then the conductor would send the car rushine onward, the dog taking Its pace with apparent ease. Bull Dog Accepts Challenge. Seven or eight crossings had been passed when there rushed toward the car from a dooryard a rangy finely muscled, white bull dog. It seemed to take the graceful bounds of the collie as a personal challenge and swung at once into the roadway within three feet of the other. By this time the passengers were be coming Intereseted and the two stylish ly-gowned young women appeared plainly worried, as It was evident that "Shep" was going to follow the car all the way to their goal—the fair grounds —or drop dead in the attempt There were few stops thereafter and the car increased Its speed but the col- SUNDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 19, 1902.—THIRTY PAGES. lie still swung along with its easy, graceful stride and the bull, with the tenacity of its breed, clung nose and nose at Its side, growling occasionally, as if determined not to be shaken off by a mere dog that never won a fight In its life. It humped its muscular, white back and tore up chunks of earth with its tough claws and finally forged ahead of the collie by several seats, but the other was content to remain even with its mistress. Passengers Become Interested. The situation was Indeed becoming Interesting. Passengers on both cars craned their necks to view the race, for the two intelligent animals seemed to have elected among themselves to malce it such. On the rear platform of the xnoto? car stood probably the most Interested onlooker. He was a quietly attired young fellow of about thirty, with a slender cane in his hand which he al most bent double in his excitement as he leaned over the side of the platform guard and watched the two speeding dogs, . . '■ His eyes bulged and occasionally he thrust his hand Into his trousers pock et nervously.". After the dogs had; run" about half a mile and neither showed signs of tiring he could ;■ hold in no longer. "Tea dollar* Jfo tlfttrz dog fiuj&i first," he shouted, Jerking his hand from bis pocket and waving aloft a bit of green. "Where?" came in just as excited tones from the rear of the trailer. "Here, and I'll make it twenty," cried the first speaker as a stout, flashily dressed man Rurried toward the front platform of the trailer. "Got you," said the fat man. "Twenty the bull quits first." The conductor held the stakes. Run Like Automatons. If there had been interest before, there was excitement now. On came the two dogs, their jaws wide apart and their tongues lolling from their mouths. The motorman crowded on speed in order to settle the question as soon as possible, but the animals showed beside the car like two tireless pieces of machinery, their regular leaps seeming almost automatic People were standing «p in the two cars and some in the front car were even on the seats. Those near the mo torman kept him posted on the prog ress of the racei% for the collia dog refused to move up or fall behind the seat occupied by the two young women. This gave rise to the impression, when the bull dog forged ahead, that the other was tiring. ' l , "Two to one on the white dog, hes got bim licked now," yelled the young fellow almost falling overboard in his excitement "Bet you he beats the hairy one to the next corner." He held aloft another twenty. The fat man started to squirm over toward the man with the money, fumbling the while in his inside coat pocket, when suddenly there was a rush of color up the aisle and a swish of silk. Fair Owner Accepts Wager. "I'll bet you on my dog," came In a shrill feminine voice over the heads of the intervening passengers. - "Good," cried the young fellow, "here you are conductor," and the two thrust twenty dollar; bills into ; the hands of th,e conductor, who was more excited at being " stake-holder ■" for eighty T dollars than the persons who v were risking it, if such a thing could be: possible. It doubled up into a shaggy ball and there was a long brown and white streak painted on the roadbed. All the blood of ita noble ancestors came to the surface in that one instant and nerved the beautiful animal to the effort. Like an arrow from a bow it shot past the white dog ten feet from the crossing and ran even with its mistress on the front platform. The bet was won. A mile further on the white bull dog seemed to collapse and it steadily fell behind, although it kept on gamely until distanced completely at the lone: hill, losing both bets for the sportive young man who started the game. "Take him on the car," yelled th© crowd, and the conductor, obllviqus of rules, stopped the car. The collie waa taken aboard and none too soon, as It panted and coughed as it lay at the feet of its fond mistress. Two silken jackets were shed then and there and amid admiring 'Ohs ami Ah's" one of the gamest animals that over won a race was covered with them. When the crowd alighted at the fair grounds gate the young man made bold to approach the owner of the col lie and her companion. "My only regeret te that there is no wine sold on the fair grounds," said he, after introducing himself. When last seen he waa buying ticket* for three.
