i'fe'Vs g&i: ial grounds restored to them, with what result is not there stated. An il legitimate MacWilliam, who was set up by the English as Earl of Clan* rickarde, and maintained purely by force of English soldiers, was given «(,• twelve abbeys in Connacht to supply as I believe, stations for his English troops and pay for them. Otherwise he would not have had one foot of ground, nor one penny of rents. This I' Is the solitary grant I find on any con s' Biderable scale given to an "Irishman." A far larger grant than this was made to the Ormonds—mainly, 1 think, to the father of Anne Bullen, who was ?i- sent over from London to get the title of Earl of Ormonri, but can scarcely be ranked as an Irishman. Except for a very few Irishmen late in Elizabeth's f. reign, who got small portions allotted to them (probably conformers in the long troubles), the lands seem to have fallen to the lot »f Englishmen, as might, indeed, be i-xpectecl when the Royal plan was to extirpate the Irish and plant in their stead "a better race." I have not attempted to make a com plete list, but my notes so far have convinced me that that charge, that the Irish slackened in patriotism for the sake "C bribes of this kind, must be deferred until the whole materials of the case are laid before us. Again we are told the Irish were conquered by themselves. Some Elizabethan drew up list of Irish, or Anglo-Irish, who had come in with the bead of a famous enemy. I think there were •seven of them—the most notable men who had heen trained up in English households from childhood, and sent out to save their heads or their Jatuls by "putting themselves in blood." This indictment against a nation is not formidable. It is part of the alle gation that the armies with which Elizabeth overran the country were Irish. That is not true. The enor 'mous cost of the army after 1558 was due to the fact that it had to he an 'army of English soldiers. The Irish would not fight against their country men. If they were dragged about in the deputy's train, it was not because he expected they would fight for him 'it was only that by keeping them un 'der guard they might be prevented from joining their own people against Kirn.' It was actually only thought safe to have one in ten of the army «f conquest Irish. This charge, too, •needs to be examined in the light of 'figures and facts. The civil strife of the tribes forms another accusation. "Here again we want the facts. In a vast number of cases, if the .English saw a territory peaceful un a la*vful ruler, they set up an 11 v., :ieSititnatte heir, appointed him by Eng li'j jis.h rigWf, and defended him with Eng lish soldilrrs. The tribe was forced to 'fight for a double reason. Thsy had to defend their own elected chief and 'they had to assert the right of their people to live by Irish law, and not by English. Tribal and national motives ffewere mingled ||fgQuarrelB. And the 1 down llpiawlossness here, and intensified the civil had strife that fol- Ipji'lowed was represented by the English & to our own day as showing the and ferooity of Irish tribes- ip^ Jnen, wholly unfit for self-government. as the Irish -were like other peo "|j|?|pie, I do not say that every tribal ^.conflict Ails tent. Its land, the as gpn* I t: beginning but I have l^eome aoross suoh a multitude of In !'$p,fstances of it that I do say we must no $ij|longer indolently ignore this problem. IllJ'but must historically examine Its ox grtji purpose, its results. In that tossing sea, great men were lifted up, one after another, as the ^^generations passed men of high ge brave oaptains of their race. •Commanders rose to by valor and In' Htagland formidable power genius. There was panic at 5 these ceaseless to organise the efforts Irish nation, for Ire English said, "was chosen there as king." If good if a wild wyrlinge rifeMld be any leader of superior authority in peace, or pow er in w«r, appeared, the whole might of Englaat was Immediately called to K}s destruction, and an external force jfthrbwn in to break the rising hope of union- and of peace, and to fling the country again into disorder. It is evi dent that we need a full examination of the. facts, and till that is done we j^wust refrain from worthless gencrall tleB of the senseless wars of the Irish. f-But, say the critics, why did the Ir tish let themselves be beaten? In the fashionable talk of "survival of the flt Ipest".among nations It is .usual to re- ppi^i* everything to character. But char fjfjjaeter must be in some relation to clr jfeiu'mstances. A jglpreatest man may have the force of character, but he can- T&iiot walk if his leg Is' broken. In the |$»te of countries, as of families and sjPI&pvlduats. circu,P8tancea may kj^jbaracter,. and virtues may be defy but ||i||yOduct of good fortune. Green proceeded to refer to two •rwhelming blows which, she said, jfelf on the Ireland at very critical periods. Iffa* flfst of these was the Norman in Sioo, in the. twelfth century, .which •ed.the pf Irish process of binding togeth- and Danes in a single polit and. job ecclesiastical organization was Just being utonce Tower, and all completed by St. O'Toole. The second was the 6rruptlon, in the reign of Henry III, of the patriotic work of media and union, carried on Of Kildare, by Gerald who was flung into the family that be laid bold .of beheaded. Con r- i'. [eluding, Mrs. Green said: Let us, however, remember the great fact that after all calamities and dangers an Irish nation still exists, made up of many bloods, united in many suffer ings, gradually to be united in many hopes. We may take as our proud badge a word so long abused. We are all natives of the one soil. "Nurse of our upbringing is she, and when you have looked on her she is not unlove ly." And the Irish nation is even now remaking its history. There have been some re quests made to Father Barry by local Irishmen to have Rowdon put on a program entirely Irish or of the Irish, I which would number several old Gae lic songs and the halanco of Moore's melodies and the like. This will, how ever. hardly be carried out, although in Boston. New York and Chicago he has done this on request. Rowdon has so many perns from the Italian. German. French and the pperas of Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as the Wagnerian masterpieces, that to make a represen tative program for a representative audience no nationality will be sllght ed. Father Barry gives his personal indorsement to Rowdon for the bene fit of those who do not know of his ability. "I consider Rowdon the great est. singer in concert today.
