In the Chancery Division recently, before Justice Ross, in the matter of A. Wynn and Mrs. Sophia Wynn vs. Thomas Symington, Mr. Clayton, K. C., with whom was Mr. Macrory, in formed the Justice that the action had been settled. It was an action by the plaintiffs, who are well known landed proprietors in Wicklow, and owners of certain mines and minerals the lough Mines, claiming specific per* formances of an agreement contained in certain letters in February, 1908, for a lease to defendant of the mines for a term of twenty-one years at a yearly rent of £1,000 after the first year. The defense was a denial of the contract that one of the terms of the contract was that zinc ore should be included in the lease, an:l there was no zinc ore. Counsel said that as a matter of fact zinc ore was not included in the contract, but in any event the owners had been pre pared to have included it in the lease. Tho object of the defendant, appar ently, in taking the lease was to turn the concern into a company, but shortly after he had entered into the contract he had regretted his bargain. There hud been prolonged negotia tions extending over the last few years, but culminating in nothing. The defendant had now entered into a consent for judgment, under which the defendant was to be released from the agreoment for the lease, and to pay .€3,500. Counsel said the consent provided that if the amount of the judgment was paid in a certain man ner, and within a particular time, a smaller sum would be accepted by the plaintiffs. Justice Ross received the consent, and made it a rule of Court. The Valley of Silence. I walk down the valley of silence, Down the dim voiceless valley alone. And I hear not the sound of a foot step, Around me, but God's and my own, And the hush of my heart is as holy As bowers where angels have flown. Long ago I was weary of voices Whose music my soul could not win Long ago I was weary of noises That fretted my soul with their dir. Long ago 1 was weary of places Where I met but the human and sin. I walked in the world with the world ly. Yet I craved what the world never gave And I said: "In the world, each Ideal— That shines like a star on life's wave— Is tossed on the shores of the real. And sleeps like a dream in the grave." And still did I pine for the perfect, And still found the false with the true I sought, 'mid the human, for heaven. And caught a mere glimpse of its blue And I sighed when the clouds of the mortal Veiled even that glimpse from my view. And I toiled on heart-tired of the human And groaned 'mid the masses of men Till I knelt, long ago, at the altar, And heard a voice call me. Since then I walk down the X'alley of silence. That lies far beyond human ken. Do you ask what I find in the valley? 'Tis my trysting-placc with tho Divine 7 And I fell at the feet of the Holy, And around me a voice said, "Be Mine!" And then rose from the depth of my soul An echo, "My heart shall be Thine." Do you ask how I live in the valley? I weep, and I dream, and I pray But my tears are as sweet as the dewdrops That fall on the roses in May. And my prayer, like a perfume from censer Ascciuleth to God night and day. In the hush of the valley of sileuoe I hear all the songs that I sing, And tho notes float down tho dim valley Till each finds a word for a wing, That to men, like the dove of the Deluge The message of peace they may bring. But far on the deep there are bil lows That never shall break on the beach And I have heard songs in the silence That never shall float into speech And I have had dreams in the valley Too lofty for language to reach. And I have seen thoughts In the val ley— Ah, me! how my spirit was stirred— They wear holy veils on their faces, Their footsteps can scarcely be heard. They pass down the valley like vir gins— Too pure for the touch of a word. Do you ask me the place of this val ley? To hearts that are harrowed by care It lieth afar between mountains, And God and His angels are there— One is the dark mountain of sorrow. And one the bright mountain of .,.V*^her Rya,,• THE IRISH STANDARDr SATURDAY, AUGUST 17. 1912. Mm R. H. The New York Independent writes: "It would be worth while to study the question why so many of the clergy of the Protestant Episcopal Church have gone «ver to the Church of Rome. Three students in the Gen eral Theological seminary in this city have lately thUB joined the Catholic Church. In Announcing these last conversions the Catholic journals mention thirty-three other graduates of the same seminary who have be come Catholics and twenty-two of its non-graduates. McConville, 1828 Second street northeast, has filed for representative of the 38th district on the Democratic ticket. James A. Peterson now stands on .the Bull Moose platform for U. Congressman Nye is in the city and has not yet filed for renominatinn. It is time enough, however. He has broken silence to express his con tempt for those who file in one party and support the platform of another. In his opinion it shows "bad faith" on their part. Perhaps Frank is right. David J. Sullivan was granted a restraining order prohibiting County Auditor Erickson from placing his name on the primary ballot as a can didate for the Republican nomination for congressman. He filed two weeks ago at the solicitation of his friends. He found that he did not have the time to make the race and withdrew.
