Rev. F. Schubiger, S. J., belongs to
the mission of Sangamner, Ahmed

very ill with typhoid fever, and as he
lives in a famine district, he is not
getting the nourishment necessary to
build up his strength. His case should
appeal to the charitable. In his letter
he says: "India, too, suffers from
drought. From the middle of May till
the middle of September last year, in
stead of fifteen inches, only one inch
of rain fell, so that not even grass
nor weeds came up, much less grain.

JAPAN THE KEY TO THE FAR
Writing from Sapporo, Japan, Rev.
Timothy Ruppel, O. F. M., says:
"I have heard of the enthusiasm for
foreign missions now shown by Catho
lics of America, and I feel they would
like to learn about our efforts in the
"For five and one-half years we have
edited at Sapporo, The Komyo, which
is the only weekly review in Japan.
Komyo means 'holy fire.' The Komyo
is widely read all over Japan and has
done good work for the propagation
and fortification of our holy faith in
this heathen land.
"The Japanese read much and let
themselves be influenced more by the
written word than by the spoken one.
We hope that our Komyo may be in
deed the 'holy fire' illuminating the
"The Komyo is a very expensive
enterprise for us poor Franciscans.
If we are not helped by outsiders it
will be impossible to maintain this
necessary work of the Catholic mis
sion press. We would like also to edit
a number of books and tracts for the
propagation of the Faith. We under
take this labor very gladly for the
love of God and souls, but our Japa
nese workers, especially our heathen
printers (we have no Catholic print
ing office) want money.
"Everybody knows that Japan
stands to-day in the first place in
the Far East, and that she will be
soon of decisive influence in the spir

fore whoever helps Japan to the true
faith, helps also China and all tlie
Europe caused a diversion of alms
away from us. I don't grudge my
more fortunate brethren in China and
Europe the alms they receive. All I
ask are the 'crumbs that fall from the
Master's table,' so that we also may
POOR MISSION ISLANDS SEND
The Marquesas Islands, Oce&nica,
whose converts barely number two
thousand, deserve the admiration of
the Christian world for their gener
osity to the missions. Themselves a
debtor for great aid since the founda
tion of the (mission in 1848, they
now seek to show their gratitude by
themselves making an offering. In
1919 they forwarded 2,354 francs (at
the ordinary rate about $470). Last
year they increased this sum to over
$600. The natives of the lonely Pac
ific islands, poor and half-civilized
though they may bei, show an admir
MORE TEACHING SISTER8 FOR
News fronff France states that seven
nuns belonging to the Sisters of Char
ity of Christian Instruction, of Nevers,
have sailed for Japan where they will
open schools in Osaka. They are the
first of their Order to go to Japan and
they will no doubt be followed b/ oth
er Sisterhoods who will try to cope
with the great task of getting hold of
the young and thus increasing the
number of conversions in the "Key to
the East." The interest manifested by
the Holy Father shows how impor
tant he considers the establishment
of the Faith there.
FEEDING THE LAMB8 IN CHINA.
Bishop Fabregues, C. M., of Paoting

ports that with the mission funds, and
alms sent for the sufferers, he has tak
en care of about fifteen thousand chil
dren so far, but has come to the end of
available resources. If the famine
does not end this June, he will need
to keep on with this rescue
work. Plenty of rain for the rice crop
will relieve the worst of the famine,
and for this prayers are being offared
by tbe Christiana.
